St. Mary schools aim for better 2nd week

It was not a good first weekend for Teche Area schools in St. Mary Parish. Centerville, Hanson, Franklin and West St. Mary went a combined 1-3 over the first week with Centerville blowing past Northwood-Lena 54-19 while West St. Mary fell to Class 3A Abbeville 39-30, Franklin fell to rival Patterson 28-14 and Hanson dropped a 45-12 decision to St. Edmund of Eunice.

The second week of the season has Centerville on the road at Ridgewood, West St. Mary playing at Opelousas High, Hanson traveling to Morgan City and Franklin traveling to North Vermilion tonight.


The Bulldogs went ground and pound against the Gators as both Andrew Cuvillier (169 yards) and Jaylon Cooks (112) had more than 100 yards rushing as Centerville rushed for 302 yards as team against Northwood-Lena.

Cooks and Cuvillier each had three touchdowns against the Gators as well.

Don’Trey Freeman added an interception return for a score in the win.

Centerville goes to Ridgewood Friday for a game to be played at Jefferson Playground. The Golden Eagles were shut out 59-0 in week 1 by St. John.

West St. Mary

The Wolfpack put up some impressive offensive numbers Thursday in the 39-30 loss to Abbeville,

Quarterback Taylun Druilhet completed 31 of 43 passes for 280 yards while Daylon Richard caught eight passes for 119 yards and Ahmon Colbert caught seven passes for 78 yards.

WSM looks to get into the win column for the first time against the Tigers (0-1) in a game that was originally set for West St. Mary but moved to Opelousas due to infrastructure problems at the Baldwin school.

Class 4A OHS fell 53-26 to Eunice High in a battle of two St. Landry Parish schools.


The host Blue Jays rolled up 261 yards rushing  and 293 yards of offense against the Tigers, who were held to 27 yards on the ground and 150 yards through the air.

Quarterback Stephen Rosamond led Hanson with 28 yards rushing and completed 9-of-17 passes for 60 yards and a touchdown to Braden Loustalot while Collin Faucheaux completed 2-of-3 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown to Pierce Hanagriff.

Hanagriff led all receivers with six catches for 108 yards while Loustalot added four catches for 33 yards.

Morgan City (0-1) lost 34-7 to Berwick.


Franklin Senior High lost its home opener Friday to long-time rival Patterson 24-14. The Hornets hit the road Friday to face North Vermilion (1-0) which beat Beau Chene 47-14 last week.

FSH will try to break a four game losing streak that dates back to week six of last season.
