FRANKLIN — Two Teche Area bass anglers took a long boat ride from Fairfax Foster Bailey Memorial Boat Landing and came back with a winning catch on May 11.

Dustin Dore and Ralph Leleux joined three other Coteau Bass Hustler boats and traveled to Lake Fausse Pointe, Dore said about the ride in Leleux’s Triton. They caught eight keepers on a variety of patterns and culled to a five-bass limit weighing 10.51 pounds to top an eight-boat field fishing the fifth CBH tournament of 2019.

“The water was high and muddy everywhere else,” Dore, a 35-year-old machinist from New Iberia, said about their decision to fish Sandy Cove, where three other tournament boats also fished.

“We really didn’t do anything different that anybody else. We were just in the right spot to catch the right fish. We didn’t catch a bunch of fish,” he said, noting they caught bass in the cypress trees, around the lily pads and here and there, mostly on Zoom Super Flukes.

Their second-biggest bass, though, was caught on a plastic worm after their return to Franklin Canal, which they fished in the waning minutes, he said.

Joey Trahan of Coteau added another highlight to his bass club fishing career. Trahan and Blaine Miller boasted the biggest bass of the tournament, a 4.72-pounder, and finished second with four bass weighing 8.35 pounds.

Trahan, who sits atop the Angler of the Year standing through five tournaments with 460 points, won the bass club’s previous tournament with nearly a 3-pound average while fishing with defending AOY Blaine Miller on Apil 27 at Chicot Lake. Their limit of bass tipped the scale at 14.22 pounds.

At Franklin, the third-place team was Marlin Hebert and Steve Doumit, who had five bass weighing 8.04 pounds.
