Jackets earn first win of season

LAKE CHARLES — Two interceptions in the final two minutes sealed New Iberia Senior High School’s first win of the 2018 football season, a 30-22 victory at District 3-5A rival LaGrange.

With the Yellow Jackets clinging to a 24-22 lead after a 40-yard interception return by Anthony Johnson had set up a four-yard TD run, also by Johnson, and a 2-point run to pull the Gators to with in 2 points with 4:04 left in the game.

NISH was forced to punt on its next possession, but after a 10-yard loss, quarterback Quintorus Jones was intercepted by Taegan Bourque, who returned the ball 20 yards for the clinching touchdown. When LHS got the ball back, a pair of incomplete passes was followed by Tyce Fuselier’s interception on the final play for the win.

A safety made it 9-0 midway through the second period, but LaGrange got two touchdown passes from Jones, one going 28 yards and the other going 10 yards to Johnson, to take a 14-9 lead.

NISH responded less than a minute after the second touchdown with a 31-yard scoring pass from Bourque to J’lon Ozenne and Thor Boudreaux ran in for the 2-point conversion to give New Iberia a 17-14 lead.

Fusilier made it a 10-point lead with an 18-yard touchdown run at the 8:46 mark, with Landry’s PAT providing the double-digit edge.
