LAKE CHARLES — Two interceptions in the final two minutes sealed New Iberia Senior High School’s first win of the 2018 football season, a 30-22 victory at District 3-5A rival LaGrange.
With the Yellow Jackets clinging to a 24-22 lead after a 40-yard interception return by Anthony Johnson had set up a four-yard TD run, also by Johnson, and a 2-point run to pull the Gators to with in 2 points with 4:04 left in the game.
NISH was forced to punt on its next possession, but after a 10-yard loss, quarterback Quintorus Jones was intercepted by Taegan Bourque, who returned the ball 20 yards for the clinching touchdown. When LHS got the ball back, a pair of incomplete passes was followed by Tyce Fuselier’s interception on the final play for the win.
NISH (1-4 overall, 1-1 district) led 7-0 in the first quarter when Chavis Archangel scored from two yards out and Seth Landry kicked the point-after.
A safety made it 9-0 midway through the second period, but LaGrange got two touchdown passes from Jones, one going 28 yards and the other going 10 yards to Johnson, to take a 14-9 lead.
NISH responded less than a minute after the second touchdown with a 31-yard scoring pass from Bourque to J’lon Ozenne and Thor Boudreaux ran in for the 2-point conversion to give New Iberia a 17-14 lead.
Fusilier made it a 10-point lead with an 18-yard touchdown run at the 8:46 mark, with Landry’s PAT providing the double-digit edge.
Fusilier led the Jackets with 42 yards and a touchdown on the ground and Archangel had 31 yards and a TD. Michael Akins completed four of six passes for 95 yards with an interception and Bourque was 4-for-10 for 85 yards with a TD and three picks.
Ozenne had 116 yards on only three catches, including the touchdown, and Cameron Blake had 29 yards on one catch with Tyson Rivet catching two passes for 22 yards.
The Yellow Jackets outgained LaGrange 276-239 thanks to 180 passing yards. Johnson had 83 yards on 11 carries and the Gators ran for 113 overall. Jones went 11-for-3 for 126 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.
NISH plays host to Lafayette (1-4, 0-2) on Friday.
Vermilion Catholic 34, Centerville 6
CENTERVILLE — Drew Lege completed 9-of-13 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns as Vermilion Catholic stayed unbeaten on the season and handed Centerville its first loss of the season with a 34-6 District 7-A win Thursday.
Lege had scoring passes of 72 and 86 yards to Ethan Lege as VCHS (5-0, 2-0) jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised to the win.
Andrew Cuvillier led Centerville (4-1, 0-1) with 104 yards rushing and Morty Frederick scored the Bulldogs only touchdown of the game on an 11-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Centerville travels to Gueydan Friday.
