Iberia Parish Council to consider expanding free-trade zone at port

The Iberia Parish Council will discuss a resolution Wednesday evening supporting the expansion of a free-trade zone to include the Frank’s International facility at the Port of Iberia.

If the subzone within the Port of South Louisiana trade zone is expanded, it would allow Frank’s to avoid taxes on inventory it moves through the port. Although this would decrease tax revenue for the parish, the argument has been made that higher employment and more activity would make up for the drop in revenue.

The resolution would go to the Foreign Trade Zone Board to be considered with the application Frank’s has on file there.

The council also will receive an update from Iberia Parish Mosquito Abatement District Executive Director Herff Jones on progress of the aircraft grant to the district, which is being sought in conjunction with Vermilion Parish.

The council narrowly approved a budget amendment to use $485,000 for the purchase of an aircraft to be reimbursed with federal grant funds passed through the Louisiana Department of Health, Office of Public Health Board. The funding to buy the aircraft would be split with Vermilion Parish, with the two parishes eventually slated to form a cooperative endeavor agreement to both use the asset for mosquito control.

Brad Cradeur, Assistant Director of Sewerage District No. 1, will speak to the council during the opening comment period to introduce himself to the Council.

In other action, the council is scheduled to consider:

• A resolution proclaiming July 2019 as Parks and Recreation Month in Iberia Parish.

• A resolution authorizing the execution of a lease agreement with the St. Nicholas Life Center for the use of its facilities as the polling place location for District 10, Precinct 4.

• A resolution ordering and calling Special Elections on Oct. 12 for the Iberia Parish Clerk of Court’s Office, to fill the unexpired term and upcoming full term after the resignation of former clerk Michael Thibodeaux.

During its committee hearings, the council will discuss several amendments to the Recreation and Playground Fund budget for $36,100 for maintenance related expenditures, $8,500 for the Lydia Veterans building, $6,800 to widen a driveway at Grand Marais Park and $5,500 in matching funds for playground equipment at Loreauville Park. It will also discuss safety issues associated with the flow of drainage on O’Donnell and Hazard roads.

The Iberia Parish Council will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday evening in the parish council meeting room on the fourth floor of the Iberia Parish Courthouse, 300 Iberia St.
