A New Iberia woman is facing criminal charges after police responded to a call about an unattended child left in a car parked at a business Tuesday evening.
Luz Elena Aguirre, 36, 700 block of Leleux Road, was booked into the Iberia Parish Jail on charges of child desertion and cruelty to a juvenile.
According to a New Iberia Police Department spokesman, officers were called to the Office Depot parking lot in the 800 block of E. Admiral Doyle Drive around 6:30 p.m. when someone reported seeing a toddler in the vehicle. When officers arrived, they were able to find the mother and have her open the vehicle, which was not running.
The spokesman said the 3-year-old child was taken from the vehicle “dripping wet” and sent to Iberia Medical Center for evaluation. The child’s condition was not known as of deadline Tuesday night.
According to the National Weather Service, the temperature in New Iberia at the time the officers arrived on the scene was 91 degrees, with a heat index of 102 degrees. Temperatures inside closed vehicles can escalate rapidly, rising to 130 degrees or more in a matter of minutes.
Police said they were not aware how long the child was in the car before officers arrived.
According to a spokesman with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies made a check of Aguirre’s residence and said other children there were under adult supervision.
