St. Martinville holds off Abbeville in district opener for both teams

Senior quarterback Tanner Harrison led St Martinville Senior High to a 15-point halftime lead and then watched as the SMSH defense held off a second-half rally from Abbeville as the Tigers came away with a 27-24 win in the District 6-3A opener for both teams Thursday night.

Harrison ran for 109 yards and completed 7-of-14 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown as SMSH built a 27-12 halftime lead over Abbeville.

The Wildcats star running back, Blake Saddler, had two kickoff returns for touchdowns in the first half and a 76 yard touchdown run in the third quarter on the way to a 150 yard rushing night and more than 300 all-purpose yards for Abbeville.

Steven Blanco rushed for 80 yards and two scores for the TIgers, who ended a two-game losing skid to improve to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in district while Abbeville fell to 5-1 and 0-1.

St. Martinville travels to Kaplan next week for another key District 6-3A contest.
