Relationship lessons remain from former boss, mentor
My daughter is the first one to remind me that a person in his mid 40s is too old to be cute, but I guess it’s just related to age.

Grand Marais' pickle barrel building has interesting history
I wrote recently about Grand Marais, Mich., and how among the things to see and do in the area was something called the Pickle Barrel Museum. I wondered what it was about, perhaps the evolution of pickle barrels?

Trip to Sesame Street Live brings my family full circle
My mom likes to tell a story of the time when I was a child she scored much-coveted front row seats to a Sesame Street Live performance in New Orleans. As an avid childhood fan, she took me to the show knowing it would be a huge hit.

Halloween costumes evolve from sheets with cutouts
Halloween goblins have gone from simple to stylish. Old sheets with cutouts for eyes are rarely seen these days, everything is haute couture. The march of the little ones is more like Project Runway and parents are more involved than ever. They don’t just accompany the kids but are into the costume thing as well.

Ask and you will receive ... but don't and you won't
“I’m really disappointed that Mr. Hardy feels we have to kiss his ring.”

Questionable call against LSU triggers outsourcing idea
The Southeastern Conference has commented publicly that it will have no public comment on the controversial non-interception in the fourth quarter of LSU’s game against Alabama.

Time is now to drop marriage suit, let issue fade away
There is little doubt Keith Bardwell’s time had run out as an effective Louisiana justice of the peace.

Memories, good food, thanks just go hand in hand
With a little more than a couple of weeks before the greatest feast day of the year, my thoughts turn not only to Thanksgiving but other holidays enjoyed with families and friends.

Brazilian bricklayer makes surprise stop at his funeral
“You’re always late. You’ll probably show up late for your own funeral!”

Former governor Treen a political role model, statesman
When I was a child, stories about former Gov. Edwin Edwards’ first two terms in office had been told at my house for a long time, but Dave Treen was governor when I became an adult. He is the governor for which I have almost a nostalgic feeling.

Monday night is now the best night for (Saints) football
Somewhere toward the end of last week’s epic New Orleans Saints football victory over the Miami Dolphins, it was obvious to most fans that a special season was only getting started.

Minvielle deserves recognition as patriotic war hero
From time to time, this column will feature an area person who deserves recognition. This issue will focus on Leon “Bubby” Minvielle, Jr., a native and lifelong resident of New Iberia, who is one of the most patriotic, respected, and public-spirited individuals in Acadiana. Since he was born on the 4th of July, he was labeled as a “Yankee Doodle Dandy.” Mr. Minvielle is 92 years young, a widower, still quite active, and stands out as living legend – – a life replete with honorable achievements.

Michigan's Grand Marais also an interesting place to visit
While locals know a bit about the Grand Marais community in Iberia Parish, I got some information about Grand Marais, Mich., from a Sweet Talk reader who dropped off a copy of the Great Lakes Pilot, a tabloid publication serving the Upper Peninsula area.

TV show public service campaign a little hypocritical
Many parents I have visited with over the years say they limit what and how much television and movies their children watch because they believe much of what is shown — violence and promiscuity — is not good for them.

Comeback making case for 2009 finally being 'next year'
OK, Saints’ fans, tell the truth. When the Saints were down 24-3 just before the half, you thought it was just not going to be our day and the Saints’ win streak was over?

Not sure what Cuba has to offer U.S. with hurricane response
I’m not going to suggest that I’d hold up the U.S. government as a model of efficiency nor suggest it always knows how to do things right, but I have to admit I did a double-take after seeing in the news an article about New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and other public officials visiting Cuba for ideas on how to better respond to hurricanes.
