A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted for Peggy D. Provost, the former Peggy Marie Derouen, 73, at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with the Rev. Mark Derise officiating. Interment will follow in Beau Pre’ Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held today from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. with the recitation of the rosary at 6 p.m. The funeral home will reopen Friday at 8 a.m. until the time of the funeral.
Peggy died at 1:32 a.m. Monday, March 12, 2007, of heart problems in a New Iberia hospital with family at her bedside.
Mrs. Provost, affectionately known as Peggy, was born in New Iberia and raised at Avery Island where her father worked for International Salt Company. When Peggy graduated from New Iberia High School in 1952 she went to work for Conn’s Drug Store. This is where she was working when she met her soon-to-be-husband, Loadice Provost Jr. “Pro” as he was affectionately known, was in the Marines and after they married she followed him were ever he was stationed. While in the service they had their two children, Kevin and Leifa. After he was discharged, they came back to New Iberia to live. Peggy’s first job was at “The Foundry.” Later, she was to be employed with New Iberia National Bank. Most of her career there was as a teller at the branch office on Center Street. When it closed she worked at the main branch for a few years. Her next job was at Bud’s, one of Wal-Mart’s spin offs. Her last job was at Wal-Mart in St. Martinville where she was know as “Miss Peggy” and for 15 years always worked register number 4. Peggy enjoyed playing bingo and going to the casino. She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and attended 5:30 mass on Saturday evening.
She is survived by her son, Kevin and wife Cyndi; a daughter, Leifa Provost Leleux, all of New Iberia; a grandson, Kenneth “Kenny” Provost (Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class in the United States Navy stationed in San Diego) and wife Zoey, three granddaughters, Christine “Chrissy” Fruge and husband Steven, Catherine “Catie” Provost and Jill Leleux; three great grandchildren, Samuel, Annabeth and Jackson Provost; and a brother, Melvin “Boo” Derouen and wife Brenda, all of New Iberia.
Mrs. Provost was preceded in death by her husband, Loadice “Pro” Provost Jr.; parents, Ernest and Lilly “Tut” Barrilleaux Derouen; a sister, Dolores Jane Derouen; paternal grandparents, Leonard and Ezilda Derouen; and maternal grandparents, Ursin and Eva LeBouef Barrilleaux.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Provost, Kenny Provost, Melvin “Boo” Derouen, and Christine Fruge.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jill Leleux, Catie and Sammy Provost.
