A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mr. Marlin G. Hebert Sr., 85, at 11 a.m. Friday, March 19, 2010, at Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church.  Fr. Michael Arnaud will be the celebrant.  Interment will follow in Nativity Mausoleum. Mr. Hebert passed away at 4 a.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at his residence with his family at his side.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Evangeline Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m., with the Rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. The funeral home will reopen on Friday from 8 a.m. until time of services.

Marlin George Hebert was born December 19, 1924, in Jeanerette and was the only child of George Nelson Hebert and Estelle Broussard Hebert. Marlin was a proud veteran of the United States Navy and served his country in the Pacific Theater during WWII.

Mr. Marlin was a butcher and retired from the A & P with 32 years.  After his retirement, he worked with Fremin's and with a few other stores in the area.

Mr. Hebert was a longtime parishioner of Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church and was a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1982.  He was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and crabbing. Spending time with his family was most important to him, whether it was on the boat, sharing a meal, or teaching his grandchildren to drive a standard shift. He was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend and leaves behind many fond memories with his family. He will be missed dearly.

Survivors include his children Angelie H. Boutte and husband, Ricky, Jody H. Cortes and husband, Fred, Vail P. Hebert and wife, Pat and Marlin G. Hebert Jr. and wife, Kellie, all of New Iberia; his daughters-in-law Karen Zollinger of Gallop, N.M. and Margie Hebert of Coteau; 17 grandchildren Harley Barrett, Kyeley Hornstein, Julie Bourgeois, John and James Albert, Hannah and Ethan Hebert, Beau and Andre' Boutte, Geoffrey and Preston Cortes, Tiffany Phillips, Crystal Arcemont, Kimberly Comeaux, Michelle Melanson and Coby and Cameron Hebert; 18 great-grandchildren; a dear friend Mary Lynn Cestia; and his faithful companion Chester the junkyard dog Hebert, his yorkie.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Jane “Jean” Dorsey Hebert; two sons Guy Anthony Hebert and Kim Jude Hebert; a grandchild Skye Hebert; and his parents, George and Estelle Hebert.

Pallbearers will be Vail and Marlin Hebert, Beau and Andre Boutte and Coby and Ethan Hebert. Honorary pallbearers will be Angelie Boutte, Jody Cortes, Ricky Boutte, Fred Cortes, Warren Hebert, Marshall Borel and Marx Louviere.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Hebert's name to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston St. Ste. 200, Lafayette, LA 70503.
