Mal Anthony Donado

Funeral services were be held on Saturday, April 10, at 1 p.m. in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Mal Anthony Donado (Abuelo), born Nino Maldonado on October 11, 1933. Mal passed away peacefully of natural causes on the evening of Thursday, April 8, 2010, at Lafayette Heart Hospital.

Deacon Paul Matte of St. Edmond Catholic Church officiated.

Interment will be held at a later date.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and a longtime resident of New Iberia and Lafayette, Mal served in many civic organizations including the Boy Scouts of America and the Kiwanis Club, for which he was a founding member in New Iberia.

As a soldier in the United States Army, Mal served during the Korean War and was a decorated veteran, having earned the Bronze Star and four Battle Stars. After the war, he attended the Radio and Television Broadcast School in New York on the G.I. Bill. In 1958 he moved to New Iberia to take up his first post as a disc jockey at KANE, where his voice and personality became known throughout the area as an announcer for sporting events, beauty pageants, Mardi Gras balls and other community affairs. During his career in broadcasting, Mal worked in many capacities including sales as well as station manager and owner. Upon retiring from radio, he began a business in marketing, for which he traveled extensively through the United States, Mexico and Central America with his family.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, Mal will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda Rimes Donado; one sister Carolyn Maldonado; two sons William J. Donado and his wife, Ameila Josey, and Anthony R. Donado and his wife, Tracy Kennan; and one daughter Mary Amanda Donado; four grandchildren Josey, Mary Cate, Rimes and Lola; and his father-in-law, Bill Rimes.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association at www.americanheartassociation.com.

Visiting hours were observed Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to time of services.
