Harold Anthony Whitman Jr. was born August 11, 1921, in New Orleans to the late Harold Anthony Whitman Sr. and Clara Schott Whitman. He was the eldest of six children. He passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at his residence.

Harold was a graduate of Fortier High School in New Orleans. After high school, he proudly served his country during World War II as a pilot in the Army Air Corps and flew supply missions over the Himalayan Mountains, commonly referred to as “the Hump.” After his service, he attended and graduated from Louisiana State University with a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering and spent his career (over 35 years) working with Texaco, mainly in the New Iberia office. He was a longtime parishioner and usher of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Iberia.

Outside of work, Harold enjoyed many hobbies. Golf was one of his favorite pastimes, and he has enjoyed many memorable rounds during the 50 years he played. He also enjoyed dancing, crossword puzzles, Sudoku puzzles and painting. He was quite the artist, having painted many beautiful watercolor paintings. He also enjoyed talking about his service during the war and wrote his memoirs for family and friends to enjoy. He leaves behind many fond memories that will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his children David Harold Whitman (Hanh) of Fairfax, Va., Gordon Terry Whitman (Ann) of Plano, Texas, Dory Whitman Thomassie of New Iberia and Carol Whitman Rodriguez (David) of Mandeville; nine grandchildren Patrick Thomassie, Tracy Thomassie Fabre (Macky), Katy Thomassie Chebul (Kris), Lisa Rodriguez Frugé (Joel), Brian Rodriguez (Brennan), Kevin Rodriguez, Phillip Whitman (Elizabeth), Daniel Whitman (Erin), Stephanie Whitman; eight great-grandchildren Adam, Scott, Mae, Noah, Nora, Theo, Alex and Olivia; brothers and sisters Melvin Whitman (Nora) of Metairie, Evelyn Wagner (Roy) of River Ridge, Winnie Jacob (Ronald) of Kenner and Marcel Whitman of Metairie (Lydia); and a sister-in-law Miriam Whitman of Metairie.
