Louisiana State Police said they are investigating the death of a New Iberia man from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot while he was in the custody of an Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy Sunday night.
According to Troop I Public Information Officer Trooper Stephen Hammons in an email at 3:04 p.m. Monday, detectives began investigating the death of 22-year-old Victor White III after he was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Hammons said Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal requested the investigation.
According to the investigator’s report, at 11:22 p.m. Sunday, Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a fight in the 300 block of Lewis Street. Deputies said they located White and discovered he was in possession of illegal narcotics.
White was taken into custody, handcuffed behind his back and taken to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office for processing, the report said.
At the Sheriff’s Office, White became uncooperative and refused to exit the deputy’s patrol vehicle, State Police said. As the deputy requested assistance, White produced a handgun and fired one round, striking himself in the back, the report said.
White was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the report.
No other details were immediately available. Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the shooting, Hammons said.
