The Azalea Garden Club presented the Beautification Award for the month of April to Willie and Bernie Bertelsman at 1480 Bank St. Their garden exhibits bougainvillea in different colors, geraniums, bottle brush, agapanthus, geramines, lemon twist, witch hazel and begonia. The club selects the award monthly, all year, from among the landscaping in the community and neighborhoods of New Iberia.
The widow and family of the late Gene Broussard, right, recently donated 12 hand-held metal detectors in his memory to be used for standard security operations at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center. Shown above are St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert, Agnes Broussard, Broussard’s widow, and Stephanie Pillaro, Broussard’s daughter. After retiring from work with a car dealership in Franklin, Broussard pursued a career in law enforcement. He rose through the ranks of the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office and took on a supervisory role at the jail during his 14 years of service. He died March 13, 2012.
Broussard Police Chief Brannon Decou has added a trained Belgian Malinois K-9 handler to the police department. The K-9 officer/handler, above, Sgt. Jill Berkenmeier, arrives to assist the law enforcement agency with 20 years of experience, including 15 years as a canine handler. The K-9, named "Sill," and its handler will assist in building searches, article searches, crowd control and dealing with combative suspects.
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Upsilon Upsilon Zeta Chapter of Iberia and St. Mary parishes, recently held its Finer Womanhood “Feed the Community Project” at Bunk Johnson Park in New Iberia. Sorority members distributed more than 200 free meals to local residents. St. Martinville Mayor Thomas Nelson, left, recently joined Anne Hidalgo, mayor of Paris, France, and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu at a meeting of the Association of Internationale des Maires Francophones, the International Association of French-speaking mayors, in Lafayette and New Orleans. French-speaking mayors from all over the world, including Louisiana, attended the meeting.
Episcopal School of Acadiana’s Quiz Bowl Team recently captured the Division III State Quiz Bowl Championship. In overall competition, ESA’s team finished second among schools of all sizes throughout Louisiana. The team includes Ajani Aubrey, Jackson Beach, Dylan Nails, Jacob Camden, Drew Picard, Francisco Kellman, Mallory Gaspard, Scott Chrysler, Moses Kitakule, Cameron Baker, Lance Myers, Lila Mount, Zachary LeBoeuf, Sam Hebert and Alex Sabatier, along with coach Ashley Dugas.
Samantha Armentor, a Highland Baptist Christian School Student, recently presented her project “Quoi c’est Les Tables Francaises?” at the Regional Social Studies Fair at Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette and finished first in Louisiana History, Division III. Armentor, who worked diligently on the project, advanced to the next level of competition scheduled for April 29 at Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles.

The newly crowned Miss Iberia will be representing Iberia Parish and competing for the Queen Sugar title in September during the Sugar Cane Festival weekend celebration. The Iberia Parish queens were crowned Aug. 3 at the Sliman Theatre.

NATCHITOCHES — Galindo Rodriguez, associate professor of music at Northwestern State University, served as a clinician recently, presenting a series of master classes for seven high school trumpeters. Cameron Esponge of Delcambre was among the students who received several private lessons during which areas of trumpet performance were studied including posture, breathing, warmups, articulation, technique, tone quality and pitch, rhythm and time. The students participated in trumpet ensemble, brass quintets, wind ensemble and jazz ensemble settings. Northwestern State graduate assistant Nathanial McReynolds of Bellville, Texas, assisted with teaching, music preparation and coaching.
