“It was an exciting game,” said Cajuns coach Shane Faucheaux. “It was two pretty good pitchers on the mound today and they battled each other for 10 innings. It was a pretty intense game for a while.”

The Cajuns scored a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth to rally after Sulphur posted a run in the bottom of the fourth to take the early lead. Smith tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth with a solo homerun but his game-winning heroics would come in the 10th inning when blasted a two-out shot into the gap between center and left field that scored Richie Mouret and Jordan Abney to give New Iberia a 4-2 lead after Sulphur tied the game in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.

“Smitty came up clutch for us and gave us that RBI-triple that scored two runs and then we were able to get a double play and strike out in the bottom of the 10th to close it out,” said Faucheaux.

Boutte picked up the win and the complete game despite throwing 148 pitches in the game. He finished out the game in the 10th inning with a strikeout as Faucheaux and pitching coach Zeke Elliot went against their instincts to pull him for a relief pitcher.

“We went against all our rules and let Cody go out there for the 10th,” said Faucheaux. “He called for the baseball and it’s something that I don’t like doing but he was throwing hard and we ran him out there for one more inning.”

McDonald proved to be just as good as Boutte for Sulphur as he allowed four runs on seven hits over 10 innings.

Mouret, Abney, Thomas Theriot and Bryce Sibille each had a hit for the Cajuns in the win.

St. Landry 15, Creole 0, 5 innings

St. Landry was invited into the tournament on Friday after Abbeville backed out of the tournament at the last minute.

The Indians will play the winner of the Eunice Oilers and American Glass Athletics today in a winner’s bracket game while the loser plays in an elimination game.
