The annual free football clinic for youngsters conducted by the Sugarland Optimist Club is as popular as ever, with numbers actually increasing the last couple of years, said clinic director Gilbert “Doc” Thomas as the group prepares for the upcoming two-day camp.

Signup for the camp is scheduled Tuesday and Thursday at Thomas’s AllState Insurance agency located at 1403 Bank Ave. in New Iberia. Signup will be from 5-7 p.m. each day. Those who sign up in advance of the camp are guaranteed a camp T-shirt.

The camp is for football players ages 7-18 and will be held July 8 at New Iberia Senior High. Thomas said the camp remains popular because it gives players the chance to do what they love.

“It’s an opportunity for those kids to play football,” said Thomas.

Whereas past camps have featured current and former college and professional players in instructional roles, Thomas said this year the NISH football team takes over that role.

“We’re going to try to get our players to run the camp,” said NISH head coach Rick Hutson. “We’re giving them a mentoring role, and also helping them realize those young kids do look up to them.”

A 7-on-7 high school tournament featuring eight South Louisiana high schools is scheduled July 7 at NISH as part of the camp.

Thomas said the 7-on-7 competition winner will receiving a traveling plaque that it will keep until the following year’s camp, when the new winner will receive the plaque.

Teams featured in the camp include New Iberia, Loreauville, Jeanerette, Franklin, West St. Mary, Northside, Patterson and LaGrange high schools.

Hutson said each team plays three games in its pool, with teams from the pools matched up against each other afterward based on their finish in their pool.

The two-day camp is sponsored by Dauterive Hospital, district attorney Phil Haney and Teche Federal Bank.

Organizers are seeking other sponsors to help cover costs of the camp, which is free of charge to participants.

Anyone wishing to sponsor the camp or make cash or in-kind donations may call Doc Thomas at 560-5595 or 201-1130.
