Players and coaches from two Iberia Soccer Association teams walked away from the Louisiana PepperPlex with first-place medals Sunday.

The ISA’s Devil Dogs and Rebels won their respective titles in U14 and U12, respectively, at the prestigious Tabasco Shootout. The ISA’s annual event attracted 37 girls and boys Division 1 teams from around the state.

The Devil Dogs, coached by Barron Kennedy and Chris Leeson, captured their second title in only their first year of play. They also won the Gobbler Cup in November in Houma.

“It’s all to the kids’ credit; coming to practice; being there every day. Everybody’s excited about winning one for our club ” ISA. I hope we can continue the streak,” Kennedy said.

The Devil Dogs opened with a 4-1 victory over the Lafayette Youth Soccer Association Revolution. They followed Saturday with a 3-1 victory over the Lafayette Futbol Club Cajun Lightning before dropping a 1-0 decision Sunday to the LYSA Fury 96 White.

Regulation play in the championship game Sunday afternoon ended 0-0 to set up a dramatic penalty kick shootout in a rematch between the Devil Dogs and Lightning. Luke Kennedy, the coach’s son, hit the deciding kick for the title.

“I was confident he could shoot it. Chris has been working with them (on PKs) and it paid off. I went crazy,” the elder Kennedy said.

Coach Glen Gary’s Rebels tore through their bracket to win the title. The Rebels smashed Cajun Soccer Club United, 3-0; spanked the Livingston Parish Soccer Association Twisters, 4-2, and then blanked the Beauregard United Soccer Association Dynamo, 8-0.

The Rebels whipped the CSC Fury White 98, 4-0, for the title.

“I was really impressed with my team. That’s probably the best they’ve ever played and they played as a team,” Gary said. “It was a total group effort. It started in the back at the goalie and to the front.

“It was a good tournament. It’s good to see the tournament grows every year. I thank the McIlhenny Co. for its support of ISA.”

The ISA’s U13 Swamp Cats, coached by Vince Comeaux, reached the finals of the U13 division of the U14 bracket and lost to the St. Charles Soccer Club Pride, 7-2.

The Blaze, ISA’s U14G team, bowed 4-0 in the semifinals to defending state champion and eventual tournament champion CSC Fury after tying the LFC Galaxy 0-0 and coming from behind to nip the Mandeville Soccer Club Blaze 2-1.

Coach Angela Louviere’s Kajun Kickers from the ISA won one match and lost two in the U11 boys bracket won by the LFC Beast.

The ISA’s U12 Sharks, coached by Mike Tarantino, also won one match in three outings, as did Angela Louviere’s ISA Kajun Kickers in U11 boys.

Also competing for the ISA were coach Chancy Crochet’s Iberia Eliminators in U12 girls.
