ERATH -- Brock Romero had a hat trick plus one and Grant Quinlan and Thomas Caffery each added a goal as Catholic High unleashed a first half barrage in beating Erath 6-0 Thursday to clinch the outright Division III, District 4 title with two games left in the regular season.

Romero had four goals in the win, one at the five minute mark off of a pass from Mark Landry. Another came at the 22 minute mark when he scored off of a throw-in from James Simon. He completed the hat trick at the 31st minute when he beat the Erath goalie on a breakaway and scored the fourth goal in the last two minutes of the half on a left-footed shot from six yards out.

Caffery scored in the 15th minute on a shot from 40 yards out that hit the cross bar and caromed into the goal and Quinlan finished out the scoring in the injury time in the first half with a left footed shot from 18 yards out.

Catholic High substituted freely in the second half and kept Erath off the scoreboard.

“The feeling was euphoric,” said CHS coach John Louviere. “This group of boys is accomplishing what other have laid the groundwork for. There have been many teams, many players and many coaches that have laid the foundation.

“Last year, we took a big step for the program by hosting a playoff game for the first time in school history. Winning district is another milestone. We have two district games left and our goal is to win them both.”

Louviere also congratulated the other members of the coaching staff, Paul Breaux, Jason Quinlan, Alan Arabie and Trish Gibson.

“I could not have done it without there help,” said Louviere.

Catholic High travels to Crowley Saturday to face Notre Dame then closes out district play Tuesday at home on senior night with North Vermilion. The team will honor seniors Romero, Caffery and Cameron Champagne.

CHS 1, Abbeville 0

On Wednesday, Catholic High clinched a share of the district title with its win over Abbeville.

Grant Quinlan scored the only goal of the game off of a crossing pass from Cameron Champagne in the 56th minute.

It was the third time this year that Catholic High beat Abbeville.

“When you play a team three times, they start to figure you out,” said CHS coach John Louviere. “Even though we were always in control of the game, Abbeville played by far their best game against us.”

Catholic High finished with 14 shots on goal in the game and limited Abbeville to only one.
