A native and lifelong resident of New Iberia, Mr. Gonsoulin passed away peacefully at 2:25 p.m. Saturday, February 06, 2010, at his residence with his family at his side.

Ulysse was a lifelong sugar cane grower and business owner in New Iberia.  He enjoyed gardening, growing vegetables and fruit trees of all kinds.  One might say he had a green thumb.  Mr. Gonsoulin was well know for bringing friends, landowners and business people the fruits of his labor.

His life and love was in agriculture and family. He was a lifelong promoter of farming and the sugar industry by his involvement with local, state and national agricultural associations and support of legislation. His goal was being successful and sharing his knowledge with successors to his business and with younger growers. He enjoyed explaining the raw sugar process and giving away raw sugar to family and friends. He encouraged young people to become involved in agricultural activities. He never met a stranger.

In his earlier days, you could always find Ulysse and Elise trolling for shrimp on opening day or on weekends. They did a lot of traveling during their married life but his favorite all time trip was to Jerusalem and his time spent at Wailing Wall. They also spent a lot of time in Rome at the Vatican.

Mr. Gonsoulin was a 4th Degree member of the K of C., he was past president of Iberia Sugar Co-op, past president of Iberia Farm Bureau and served on the Louisiana Farm Bureau Board of Directors.  He served on the American Sugar Cane League Board for a number of years.  Ulysse was member of the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service Board, the Holy Name Society and the Society of Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Elise Babineaux Gonsoulin; five children Kathleen Armentor and husband, Billy, Caroline Reaux and husband, Glynn, Ronald Gonsoulin and wife, Cheryl, Robert Gonsoulin and wife, Theresa and Felix Gonsoulin and wife, Melanie; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and his sisters and brother Lucille Taylor, Jeanette Richard, Florence Gossen and Andrew Gonsoulin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ulysse Gonsoulin Sr. and Edna Berard Gonsoulin; six sisters Edna G. Hayes, Eunice G. Thibodeaux, Alice G. Estilette, Alma G. Kilchrist, Louise G. Kilchrist and Noelie G. “Sweets” Lastrapes; a brother Daniel Gonsoulin; and two grandsons William A. Armentor and Rodney Thomas Gonsoulin.

Pallbearers will be Keven Gonsoulin, William R. Armentor, Dean Courville, Dwayne Dugas, Jessie Derouen and Greig Robicheaux.  Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Adams, Ronnie Boudreaux, Bobby Broussard, Monique Derouen, Paul Crochet, Chester Babineaux, Carrol Blanchard, Claude Duet and Dr. Charles Miller.

The family wishes to thank Fr. Mark Derise and Fr. Blaine Clements for their spiritual support for the family in their time of need.  A special thanks to his sitters Judy Miller (his niece), Susan Mire, Catherine Jones, Rosalind Dartez, Cassie Hines, Becky Suire and Shirley Boutte, for the wonderful care they provided.  An extra special thanks to Dr. Sigue and Nurse Laura Laverne, Dr. Mike Alvarez, and Dr. Paul Gulotta for the caring touch to both the Gonsoulin's and the whole family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Gonsoulin's name to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Building Fund, 1303 St. Jude Ave. New Iberia, LA 70560.
