Why?

Why is the City of New Iberia becoming competition for the very business' that bring it tax revenue? The Parks and Recreation Dept. is now offering dance classes! I have no doubt that Ms. Borel is a fine person and wonderful dancer, but I feel the government has no right to offer services that the private sector is offering. If Ms. Borel (or any other person) wants to start a business they should do so like every one else, with their own finances, and not rely on the government for help. If I were an owner of a dance studio in New Iberia, I would be very upset with this. What other business will the city get into next? A grocery store? A mechanic shop? A construction company? Government needs to get out of the way, not interfere , and let the free enterprise system work!

" Oh and one more thing if males weren't such a**es maybe more females would actually find them one and settle down. See men only think about one thing and when that gets old they decide to go somewhere else. So don't just say it's the females and don't say we have to have a man b/c I know plenty of single women who darn sure can live without men. "

" I am a female, I work, I do not get ANY government assistance, I do not put my children in dancing, karate, etc. because it is tooo expensive. I think this program is a wonderful idea b/c it gives children the chance to enrich their lives. Nobody is griping b/c they offer yoga or other such activities and do you think its only the foodstamp recipients and HUD recipients who participate in the other programs. Come on now you said yourself they need to get off their "lazy butts" and go to work. "

" The receration dept is catering to food stamp receiptants and those who live in HUD housing. Don't who people think you get enough. Live for free, eat for free, free health care..........come on people, get married or get off your lazy butts and GET A JOB! If you want nicer things for your kids work for it so us tax payers can quit footing the bill for it. It is screwed up to support so many females with kids because they think they don't need a man to get by but is sponging off the government "

I am so glad you know what my tax dollars should go to. Who am I to decide. How many children should our parks and recreation dept send to New Orleans for free NEXT summer? Why dont you offer to pay for the whole progam next summer if YOU think it is so worthy a cause. "

" It's Parks and Recreation at the Community Center! Not every family has the necessary means in today's economic times to offer their child certain luxury activities. But if these dance classes or any other recreational activies are offeded to children so be it. We my friend ALL pay TAXES! And ALL GOD'S children deserve better, who are you people to judge them. That might give those kids a memory they may never forget. It may make a difference in one kid's life and if it does it was all worth it. So find another soap box to get on. "

A lot of people hunt, fish, go on private trail rides, race cars at private tracks, ride four wheelers.I think they should all get a few public dollars for their endevors, since they dont like to dance or play a game with some kind of ball. "

" NIRD = New Iberia RECREATION Dept. I guess we should get rid of the parks and the Community Center, as well as the Sliman We should get rid of all NIRD activities and sports. Yes, I agree to not having big gov't, but offering community activites is something positive. No wonder many people move away from NI. Many cities offer various community activites that help to make it a nice place to live. Don't mistake gov't handouts with community enrichment. This is for any Iberian, not low income. "

" The city just spent $50,000 for a police department study that we all knew the answer too before the study was even commissioned. We just gave parish employees a raise.
How could anyone complain about a few dollars for free, or reduced price, dancing lessons? How much can that possibly cost?

Teach them dance, karate, acting, boys scouts, civil air patrol, or anything that may get them away from video games and hanging out on street corners. "

Its a Community Center wrote on Jan 20, 2010 1:37 PM:

" I think people can calm down about "taxes paying for this". Usually, the only thing the instructor is making is from whoever is paying for the class. The government is not paying her. The COMMUNITY Center is the only thing being provided, which is already being paid for by the COMMUNITY. At least the building is being put to good use. "

" Jeff complains about too many people complaining. Jeff do you live under a bridge, or are you a highland troll? How are you feeling about the loss of your deceased heros seat, to a dreaded republican? I agree with Craig less government is what we need. Cut all government expenditures possible. Police the streets, build roads, and get out of our lives. If you want to send your kid to dance class, cut off your cable and stop smoking and drinking for a few months. You may save enough to buy health insurance. "

" Many parents really don't have the resources to provide activities for their kids. Are you assuming that these are kids whose parents don't care? The ones who really don't care (and I know a lot of them) don't send their kids to dance classes, even if it's free.

This program might not directly prevent crimes, but any positive activity for girls can prevent or delay teen pregnancy. Every year a teenager doesn't get pregnant, her chances of becoming a productive citizen rise sharply, and her children will have a better future. That's worth more than an M-16. "

    " To Jeff,

If most parents would get involved in the lives of their children then maybe we wouldn't need the government to do it for us. This class will not stop 1 crime from being commited in this town. It cost alot more than the price of one bullet to stop violence. It starts in the home. "

Craig wrote on Jan 19, 2010 12:34 PM:

" Most of you missed the point. It is NOT the GOVERNMENTS responsibility to offer such services. I would prefer they use our tax money to do thing it was intended to do ie. fix our roads, police our streets, things that benefit the ENTIRE community. I would prefer to not pay any tax at all than pay taxes for things like this. My kids are in dance classes with a private company. I am by no way rich. I choose to make choices in my families life that benefit my kids without help from the government. "

Jeff wrote on Jan 19, 2010 10:18 AM:

" Okay, I'm starting to believe that there's some sort of local competition to see who can complain the most, for no reason at all. Every troll in the state seems to have something to complain about on this forum.

Dance classes? For kids??? In a town with a lot of drugs and few positive activities for young people? It's an outrage!

I'm guessing the total outlay for this class is less than the cost of a single M-16 rifle. Don't worry. We can still afford to kill people. "

are limited a chance to learn and perform
dancing that is recreational. i am all for the private sector but this is something
that should be applauded. nird is doing a great job in trying to offer everyone a chance to do something. that is a good thing "

" These classes are usually offered for a fee. A fee which may be more affordable to interested parties. There usually is no obligation other than monthly. I would like to check into this. My daughter would love to take dance classes, but, because she is an athlete and performer, has never commited to a nine or ten month class. I will be contacting City of New Iberia today for more information. "

Have you stopped to think of all the people who can't afford the private lessons, but could benifit physically from the avtivity? How about seniors living on a budget? What a great way to put our tax dollars to work! Bravo NIRD! "

" If your dance school offers a quality service for the price, you should not have to worry. You don't see the gyms complaining that the city offers aerobics. The private swim teachers are not complaining about the park offering swim lessons. Maybe they just want to offer dancing without the big deal recitals that cost a fortune and cause people with lower incomes or people that chose to live within their means to not put their children into dancing. Cities often offer these things for the community. "
