TV? No big deal

Catholic High’s success this year has come from an impressive aerial show highlighted by quarterback Taylor Bullock, the Tulane commitment who has thrown for more than 2,500 yards and 32 touchdowns, and receivers Devin Boutte, Cory Brodie and Thomas Theriot.

Friday night, the four starters get their introduction to a more state-wide audience as No. 20 seed Catholic High takes on No. 29 seed Bogalusa in the regional round of the Class 3A playoffs in a game scheduled to be televised as the Cox 4 high school game of the week.

But while the four are ready for the game, they are more interested in extending the season one more week to reach a team goal than playing under the bright lights.

“It was a goal this year to win the district championship and to play the week of Thanksgiving,” said Brodie, the senior wide receiver who is third on the team with 41 receptions and second with 530 yards. “While we didn’t win the title this year, we can still play for Thanksgiving.

“I think that it will still be a good showing. We can let the people around the state know what we’re really made of and let people know what Catholic High football is made of.”

Boutte, who has been in the top 10 in the state all year with a team-leading 59 receptions for 1,187 yards and 15 touchdowns, is also ready for the bright lights but doesn’t think that it’s a big deal.

“It puts a little more pressure on us to do good but I think that we’ll do well with an audience,” said Boutte. “We had a good week practicing.

“They are a fast team but we’re going to do our job every play, one play at a time.”

Leading the aerial attack is Bullock, who not only has shown off his arm this year, but last week against West Feliciana, showed that he can run the ball too. He has rushed for 300 yards and six touchdown this year.

“Obviously this is a big game,” said Bullock. “We get a chance to be on TV and show everybody what we can do. All it is, though, is a chance for everybody to watch Catholic High.”

The senior QB doesn’t think that it’s going to be that big a deal.

“There is no difference between this game and any other game,” said Bullock. “As long as we treat it like any other game then I think that we’ll be OK.

“Bogalusa is a talented team but I think that we have the advantage because it’s a home game and they have a ways to travel to play us. After traveling last week, we’d rather be home this week that have to be on the road again.”

Theriot, who has 50 receptions for 350 yards and seven touchdowns this year, also believes the TV cameras make no difference this week.

“It’s just a good chance to show people what we can do,” said Theriot. “We know that they have a good offense, now we need to show that we have a good offense.”

CHS coach Craig Brodie believes that his team is ready for television.

“It’s good exposure for the school and some of the players who hopefully will get some All-state honors and catch the eye of some recruiters from around the state and the area,” said Brodie, who doesn’t think that being on TV is going to affect the team.

“Once you get in the game, you really don’t think about being on TV.”

The Catholic High coach also doesn’t believe that being on TV will affect what the team does on offense. He said that television tends to work around the game at the high school level; the game isn’t affected by TV time-outs like it is in the colleges or pros.

“I just hope the game doesn’t get into a scoring fest but Bogalusa scored 48 points last week and the team they played scored 42. You never know what’s going to happen,” said Brodie.
