COTEAU — An early morning fire destroyed a small home on Forrest Leblanc Road, with the cause of the blaze still under investigation.

Firefighters responded at 5:25 a.m. to a report of a structure fire off Coteau Road west of U.S. 90.

Iberia Parish Fire Chief Guy Bonin said the structure was fully engulfed when units arrived on the scene.

“It was lit up, fully burning when we got there,” Bonin said. “We put it out, but because it was a structure fire, it’s under investigation by the state fire marshal. That’s what we do with those.”

Bonin said the cause of the fire will be one aspect of the fire marshal’s investigation. The small house was wired for electricity, but whether there was electricity to the structure is still in question.

“It was a little rent house, fairly small,” Bonin said. “They were using it for storage. We just want to check in to some things.”

The Iberia Parish Fire District, Coteau, Rynella, BOM and Delcambre fire departments responded to the call.

Damage was contained to the structure, and no injuries were reported in the firefighting process.

" I wonder why they say that the house was unoccupied and used for storage when just a couple months ago we got notice in the mail about an offender living there?? Checking the site for LA Offenders, he's still listed at that address? I'm not making this up, check it out yourself. I 'd sure like to know the truth, although I 'm not overly concerned about his well-being but from a human standpoint I hope he's okay and this wasn't arson or worse? Just curious. "
