A Civil action

Published/Last Modified on Monday, November 9, 2009 2:08 PM CST

Shadows-on-the-Teche again played host to its annual Civil War re-enactment Saturday and Sunday.

The re-enactors camped out for the weekend on the grounds of the Shadows’ historic home. Throughout the weekend, visitors talked with re-enactors about weapons and the lifestyle of the 1860s.

The goal of the event is to depict various parts of the Civil War that played out in the Teche Area.

In the spring of 1863, federal forces captured many Louisiana towns between New Orleans and Vermilionville — now Lafayette — before moving north to Alexandria. They then returned to the area in the fall of 1863 through the winter of 1864 in the Second Teche Campaign, occupying the Weeks’ family home.

For many who attended, it was as close to seeing the real thing as one can get.
