Hostile Work Enviroment

Fed Up

This is for all the people who work or haved worked in a hostile work enviroment. Why is it when someone gets a promotion it goes straight to there head ? It is so bad you would hope this person would never return to work the next day.  The company that I work for has a manager that screams, yells, curses, takes drugs and talks bad about everyone to the other co-workers. Just like a high school kid that is caddy. This person has been reported to upper management, to the president and nothing still gets done about it, and has also been reported to human resources that doesn't work our human resource manager tells this person who called. You would never guess that this a major corporation. With the way jobs are these days you have to sit back and take it. Most of everyone is on anxiety medicine now. Stress is not what we call it at the end of the day we call it misery. Is there any advice for a hopeless situation like ours. We thought about calling a attorney to pursue this but if know one listens at coroparte where do we turn. Maybe we should start a group that helps people deal with this kind of anguish. Is there any good advice for this situation.

" Why say something to HR they tell the person you are reporting that you called. Last week my boss was screaming and cursing over reports that were screwed up blaming everyone for something no one had control over. That's when I decided enough this person will not scream at me like this again there is a law against this No One Should have to work in this type of enviroment. Every person like this meets the end it can't go on for ever. "

To think that a manager that over sees over 75 people can get away with that kind of behavior in a top notch facility for a major company that says alot about standards in BIG BUSINESS. "

But the transferee is bullying him into believing he, the super, will lose his job for striking the transferee! Even though the super has a broken hand, in 3 places no less! "

" We have a transferee from another "campus". He did NOT like the way his shift supervisor was explaining the "plant operation", so he JUMPED into his face.
The shift supervisor put his hands "up" to deflect what he thought was to be an attack. When he pushed the transferee away, he, the transferee, started pummeling the super. He broke his hand(the super's) in three places! He is NOW bullying everyone NOT to talk about what happened. OR they would receive the same treeatment! No one got fired, to afraid to talk! "

" What is needed is a paper trail! By reporting your complaint, there is someone who has talked to you about your concerns. Time/Date/Event! Remember ALL of this. Write everything down. Even names of witnesses, or people present, that may be "hostile" witnesses.
When you have enough "paper", go to HR. They are required to protect employees, AND you are an employee!
IF HR will not protect you, THEN (time/Date/Event) go and seek a "qualified" LABOR Lawyer! "

However, this is a small town, and while may get some immediate gratification, unless you are well anchored, you risk being branded long term as a trouble maker. You get rid of this jerk, chances are pretty good the next one won't be any better. You will have to decide for yourself if it's worth the trouble and risk. "

" Oh, I have SO been there too! My former manager belittled me, told co-workers private information about me, harrassed me, shunned me... He is skilled at saying things "politically correct" but when you factor in the tone of voice, facial expressions, body language... it becomes intimidation. I too reported it and other violations to corp to no avail. I transferred out. What comes around goes around.... Wish I had had somewhere to turn too. We might be talking about the same guy!! "

" Just remember that HR is not for Employees, its for Employers. HR is there to prove the company right and the employee with a complaint wrong or to tell on the employee to their supervisor in an attempt to get rid of the problem. EAP is the same way... "

" There are companies where upper management likes hearing about their workers under duress from a front line supervisor. It's nothing new and will always be around. Most workers will cower at the loud, crass, obnoxious supervisor. Some of these supervisors will tell you the workers deserve to be under their thumbs. Those that don't put up with it unfortunately wind up being promoted to supervisor and become loud, crass and obnoxious. It's a vicious cycle. "

" Try this one the office manager sleeping with the boss and everybody knowing about it even HR, and they both mis treat you ad get away with it like it's and award. Leaving everyone else to suffer, they also make you feel so stupid for reporting it. Then to have HR tell them you reported it. And you loose your job over it. Upper mgt stick together bottom line. "

I reported it through the "Anonomous" ethics hotline and they told my supervisor it was me. I was harrased and written up for EVERYTHING in the book 2 minutes late...Working 39 hours instead of 40 in a week, Yeah I did get unemployment, but she is still there and this is job time I cannot use becasue of the reference she gives when a potential employer calls..I leave it off my resume now.Good luck! " Absolutely there is advice, call OSHA, you can put in a complaint which they are responsible for investigating. You don't even have to give your name. Go to OSHA.gov and they will have a toll free number for the baton rouge office. Workplace violence is a federal regulation, harassment, and of course the drug situation. Don't you have drug and alcohol policy at your work? "

" You do not have to take it, report it to LA Workers Commission.True, LA is an at-will state & can fire you for any reason, but you can also sue the employer in civil court and/or still collect unemployment.I was fired for being absent from work, but I had valid dr excuses. In the end,I was awarded unemployment, back pay,& I am enrolled in school. You mind wind up in a better situation. This is mental anguish, file FMLA & take 26 weeks off, with pay.Bet they won't like that. " For all practical purposes, we're all adults, and adults have no place acting like spoiled schoolyard bullies in a professional business. There is absolutely nothing wrong with standing up to a bully in the workplace if you do it professionally...You can tell them to "back-off" person to person, and not have to worry if your job performance is good. Most power trippers need a wake up call. They operate on fear and stress...give them a taste of their own medicine. Another thing you can do is have everyone in the department request a transfer...at the same time. "
