No parking at school!

I am a parent of 2 students at North Lewis school, and I would like to know why, with all of the property in the front of the new school, we have a parking lot that holds an estimated 30-40 cars! There are over 700 students in that school! There is so much property that is left to just look pretty. Magnolia and CaneView have twice the amount of "non-teacher" parking at their schools. As well, with the parking they have put, there is no walkway to get from the parking lot to the entrance, visitors must walk all the way around the parking lot, through the car line! How are they supposed to have Grandparents Day, performance events, Open house, etc for 700+ students with the same amount of parking they had last year? At least last year we could see they did not have land to place parking lots, now there is plenty, and it's just going to be grass! We are back to parking down Andre Street and in the medical parking lots! And even better, the teachers use the new area so they don't have to worry about getting out of carline, but this takes up visitor parking during events, and we as visitors are NOT allowed to park in their designated parking spaces. Who designed this parking lot and why did they choose to do it this way?

" I'm sorry, I meant to say that it was Troy Comeaux (now a parish councilman), not Troy Broussard, that got up in front of all of us ELL parents, and asked us to buy the boiled crawfish tickets, a fundraiser to help improve the Pepper Plex in preparation for Evangeline Little League's upcoming move. I believe that was in the spring of 2007, which was a couple of years before our children's NLE school was scheduled to be replaced. Our volunteer based Evangeline Little League wasn't taken at all, it moved to the Pepper Plex fields. "

" Quit twisting the truth! Evangeline Little League enjoyed using that School Board Property for YEARS. My son played with Evangeline Little League for 4 years and has attended North Lewis Elementary for 6 1/2 years. ELL had known for quite some time that they would be moving their baseball games to the new Pepper Plex fields, along with the ILL. Troy Broussard got up in front of all of us ELL parents and asked us to buy crawfish tickets to help pay for improvements at the Pepper Plex in preparation for ELL's upcoming move. (continued) "

" Seems you all (NLE teachers and parents) got what you wanted, a new school at the expense of any and all. Every chance to criticize and destroy the community, volunteer-based Little League was taken (by parents and teachers alike). Every opportunity to work together was foregone. Those of us who pay equal taxes and still choose private education are accustomed to sweating in order to improve facilities. Sometimes selfishness and greed come back to haunt. "

" We APPRECIATE the new school very much!!! We're involved parents who attend our chilren's school functions regularly and would like to be able to park at the school when attending their school functions. There has usually been a good turnout of parents during NLE functions, although there was some difficulty parking at the old school. Walking or running across N. Lewis St. is too dangerous.

Would parents be encouraged to park on the new grass (expected to be planted) in front of the school if there isn't enough visitors parking for school functions?

" The parking lot at Caneview is for teachers and parents. There is no separate parking for parents. It appears that Caneview has less parking than any of the other new schools built.
Before complaining about the amount of spots at NLE, check to see how much money was allocated for the building of that facility. Maybe the money was spent elsewhere, like providing a better school building rather than parking. "

" I agree with your limestone idea. That would be a good alternative to add additional parking at NLE. The additional parking might be necessary for many school functions, but wouldn't be used every day of the school year. So limestone, a cheaper alternative, would be a good compromise for the school board to provide the additional parking spaces. They could even do some inexpensive landscaping between the cemented areas and the limestone areas. Maybe the 6th graders could help by planting some small shrubs or small trees in the landscaping on Arbor Day. "

" Just to clarify that "NLE mom of 2" and "NLE Mom of 2" are not the same person. She may have a point, but I don't pick my children up in the car line after school. "

" I thought the exact same thing. They have beautiful trees with wonderful shade and NO ONE will be able to utilize the shade. It makes no sense. I am also hoping that more cement is poured for parking. Just think about it...if they have a program for just one grade, that's about 100+ students. If each has one person to go see the program that's already too many for the spots they have now. Someone missed the point of tearing down the old school. If they can't pour more cement, can they at least put limestone? "

" I have witnessed teachers leaving while the car line is in progress. I have not seen one teacher wait for the kids to get safely in their car. The teachers procedure is to enter their car and back out with out regard to the kids or the other vehicles.
Parking was a problem at the old school because the teachers would park behind a parents car blocking them in because you were in their parking space. This has happened to me twice when going in for a teacher-parent conference during school hours. "

" Our children also attend NLE and we really appreciate the beautiful new school.

Maybe the IPSB could use the school board millage renewal tax that was passed last month, to pay for more parking in front or on the side of, the new school.

A large covered play area for the kids to play outside also would be very nice. The large shady oak trees are now outside the fenced in play ground.
There is currently no place for kids to play in the shade anymore when the sun will become very hot again. "

" The school board can't blame Evangeline Little League anymore for their parking problems. When ELL was there it could get tricky for awards nite etc( but only during the spring time). It was sooo easy to go to a neighborhood park to see the grand kids play and not have to walk a half mile just to get to the bleachers. With all the money spent and the land not utilized one would think that this would have been thought out a bit better, unless of course the school board plans to sell that front property to Dauterive Hospital. Ummm "
