I was stationed at Fort Hood for 4 years from 2001-2005. I deployed to Iraq from there and it will always have a little piece of my heart.

One thought comes to mind about Ft. Hood. This is another example where a shooter feels comfortable enought to do this because military posts are " gun free zones", just like on a college campus. Lets pass laws that allow people carry concealed weapons on military bases and college campuses!!!! He would have been less likely to do this if he knew other Soldiers had pistols!!!!

He had never been deployed and just the thought that there were combat veterans walking around with pistols might have stopped this horrible event.

Long live the 2nd Amendment!!!!!!!

" Concerned Teacher..In my opinion all gun laws should be a state issue.

Anti-Hood, I was stationed at Ft Hood for 4 years. They have 4 golf courses, 2 Px's, 2 Movie theatres, bowling, Skeet shooting, Paintball and a lake where you can rent a bass boat.

You are 1 hour from Austin. You are 2 hours from Dallas. You are 2 hours from San Antionio.

I am from Dallas and was raised in the big city. I chose to stay in New Iberia because the people are friendly and it is a slower pace. "

" Concerned Teacher: Yep, state law. During the last legislative session, Representative Ernest Wooton introduced HB27, which would have allowed concealed handgun permit holders to carry concealed weapons on university campuses, but the bill failed. I think, at the very least, teachers who obtain a concealed handgun license should be able to carry a firearm if they so choose. "

" To Anti FT Hood: If you're from the city and hate being in the country, you should sign up for yoga instead of The U.S. Military. Maybe Fort Hood should open a spa to accommodate folks like you. After all, everyone knows that nothing would do more for the military's "morale" than a fresh wax, a pedicure, and a colon cleansing.

As far as your comment,"podunk southern states", I guess carjackings, transvestites, crowded malls, gridlocked traffic, and tripping over homeless people, must be an acquired taste only for the most sophisticated of palates. Right? "

" this is what happens when you
    a) try to hide problems on a military installation like Hood.

    b) Build a base like hood out in the middle of nowhere and expect morale to be high.

let's face it unless you're from texas or louisiana or any of the podunk southern states, and if you're from a rual area this is the best thing smokin' however if you're from the city and absolutely hate being out in the country this place is just plain bad. "

" Thank you, Tom, for responding. As usual, I have found you level-headed in your explanations.

To Cajunator, Athiest, and Tom, what would it take to create the kind of situation you propose? Is it a state law that makes schools a gun and alcohol free zone? Just asking for help in order to understand this better. "

" I will never believe this man snapped (which seems to be the politically correct way to describe his actions) and went on a shooting spree because of his upcoming deployment. He was not being deployed to fight his Moslem brothers. We don’t send shrinks into combat. We send them to support those who are in combat.

I believe he is nothing more than a suicide bomber who used a pistol instead of a bomb. "

I can either "hope" that it never happens, or I can proactively "prepare" for it. I choose the latter. "

" Cajunator and Tom...I agree 100%. The hard working and law abiding citizens of this great country should be allowed to defend themselves at all times. The notion of a "Gun Free Zone" is absurd. I have a CHL and I attended a 12 hour class and then was required to qualify with my pistol at the range. I am a senior NCO in the Army and agree that senior NCO's and officiers should be armed at a minimum. So should students and teachers that have attained their CHL. "

" Concerned Teacher: I don't suppose you are frightened by the number of kids in LA caught with guns at school. 6 months ago a student at LaRose-Cut Off Middle School brought a gun to school, shot at a teacher, then killed himself, and another at Louisiana New School Academy was caught with a gun, and another at Southeast Middle School in Shreveport caught with a loaded rifle in his locker.2 months ago a student at Istrouma High in Baton Rouge was caught with a gun.

    Newsflash: "Nutcases" already have guns.

Have you made any students angry lately? "

" Concerned Teacher: You just answered your own question before you even asked it.

"There are too many nutcases out there"

You see, the "nutcases" already bring their guns in "gun free zones". They don't need a law to tell them they can. And they aren't doing it for self defense. When they bring guns in "gun free zones" it's usually to murder defenseless law abiding people like you and me. When you walk into a "gun free zone", you are essentially bound by law to get raped, assaulted, or killed, if some "nutcase" says so. "

" To Concerned Teacher. The concealed carry permit, in theory, should weed out those who are too irresponsible or too unstable to carry a weapon. I’m not sure how extensive a background check for concealed carry is, but I assume it’s only to determine criminal history. If so, it could be strengthened to include some type of psychological evaluation. I truly believe if some teachers were armed they could reduce the casualties we’ve seen in some of our schools over the past few years. "

Too late for the families of those who were killed by one of their own. Shame..shame "

" As a teacher, I agree and disagree with Tom and Athiest. It is certainly possible that soldiers w/weapons might have prevented further tragedies. I believe people should be allowed to have weapons IF they are trained to use them. There are too many nutcases out there, and the possibility of their carrying guns frightens me. As a teacher, I have yet to fear for my life, but I know some teachers who should never be allowed to hold a weapon--let alone teach a student. I'd be curious to hear your take on how to deal with that. Thank you. "

" 1000000% true. I've always felt the same way. How many times have you ever seen on the news, that some lunatic went on a shooting spree at a gun show? The very fact that these cowards choose "gun free zones", should be able to be used in court to prove they were not "insane", thus making them eligible for the death penalty. "

" I hate to agree with an atheist but I’m kinda forced to on this.

However, there’s no need for military to carry concealed. Senior NCO’s and officers in combat arms MOS’s should be allowed to carry openly on federal property.

Available weapons at Ft. Hood may not have prevented all the casualties but I believe it would have greatly reduced them.

I also believe that teachers in middle and high school should be able to carry concealed, and anyone in college over a certain age should also be able too. "
