BATON ROUGE -- All six Iberia Parish schools had their football seasons extended Sunday as New Iberia Senior High, Westgate, Catholic High, Loreauville, Jeanerette and Delcambre all received bids to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association playoffs which begin later this week.

Loreauville High drew the highest seed of the six and will play host to a first round playoff game while the other five will be on the road for the first round.

LHS coach Trent Delahoussaye, whose Tigers (8-2) drew the 16th seed in Class 2A, was pleased that his team got in the playoffs but not so happy that Loreauville drew District 6-2A opponent Opelousas Catholic, seeded 17th. OCHS (7-3) won the district title, handing Loreauville its only league loss, 34-14 in Opelousas on Oct. 16.

“We ended up with a first round game (at home) but we drew OC again,” said Delahoussaye. “You really don’t want to play a team that you’ve played before. You’d rather play someone you’ve never seen.

“But I think that tables are different this time. We’re playing better football than we were when we played them the first time and we’ve go them at home.

“Hopefully the weather conditions are better than the last time because turnovers really hurt us in that game.”

Both New Iberia Senior High and Westgate High got into the Class 5A playoffs.

Westgate (5-4) drew the higher seed of the two with the 21st seed and will travel to Mandeville (7-3), which was the 12th seed while NISH (7-3) ended up the 29th seed and will travel to Baton Rouge to face No. 4 seed Central (9-1).

“Our record is 0-0 right now just like everyone else’s,” said NISH coach Rick Hutson. “We didn’t want to end the season on a loss but I was pleased with how we played in the last game and thought it was our best game of the year.

“We originally thought that we’d be 31 or 32 and draw Rummel or West Monroe and I was thinking that if we could move up a seed we’d play Acadiana, someone that we know well. But we ended up one spot higher than that and drew one of the top two or three teams in the state in Central.”

WHS coach Brian Fine, whose team had an open date in week 10, is looking forward to seeing his team get back to action this week in preparation for the playoff game.

“It’s always good to get into the playoffs and it was one of our goals this year,” said Fine. “I hope the week off helped us so that we come back to practice fresh. We gave our kids a few days off and hopefully they come back fresh and ready to go.”

Fine said the Tigers will be making their longest road trip of the year for the first round playoff game.

Catholic High (6-4) made it into the postseason as the 20th seed in Class 3A and will travel to No. 13 seed West Feliciana (6-4).

“We’re disappointed in how the last game of the season ended and looking where we would have been if we had won which would be a better position than we are in now,” said CHS coach Craig Brodie. “The best 32 are in right now and there isn’t going to be an easy game from here on out. Hopefully we will play well and keep the season going.”

Brodie said that he expected Catholic High would end up 19 or 20 and draw Kaplan in the first round.

Jeanerette Senior High (7-3), in the playoffs for the first time in three years, drew the 20th seed in Class 2A and will travel to No. 13 seed Springhill (4-6) in the first round.

“I’m very excited about the draw,” said JSH coach Terry Washington. “I said going into Friday’s game against Loreauville that I didn’t want to lose but I knew that if we won we’d play Opelousas Catholic in the first round and I didn’t want to play them and I know that Loreauville didn’t want to play them again.

“If we can pull this game off then we get a second round game at home and that’s what we want to do.”

Delcambre (6-4) drew the 24th seed in Class A and will travel to Opelousas to play No. 9 seed Westminster Christian Academy (8-2) in the first round.

“It’s not that far a trip to make,” said DHS coach Darcy Delcambre. “We feel that we got a decent draw. Not overpowering. We thought that it would be Westminster or South Cameron. I thought that we’d end up around No. 24”

Delcambre thought that a couple of games that DHS should have won would have given the Panthers a higher seed but overall he was pleased with the fact that even though the teams lost several players from last year, younger players stepped up this year to take control of the team.

All six parish teams will play at 7 p.m. Friday.

NISH will play Central High at Central Middle School campus. Westgate will play at Mandeville High School. Catholic High will play at West Feliciana High School. Jeanerette will play at Springfield High School. Delcambre will play at Westminster’s on-campus stadium just outside of Opelousas.

Advance-sale tickets for the games should be available starting Tuesday or Wednesday. Contact the respective school offices for more information.
