“The book sale was a huge success,” said Connie Comeaux, chairwoman of this year’s Friends of the Library Book Sale.
The sale included much more than books, although there were thousands of those available in both paperback and hardcover editions. The books were arranged by genre and alphabetically, with a separate section for collectible and unique books. In addition to the literary offerings, video tapes, record albums, DVDs, books on tape, cassettes, reference books and more filled the Cyr-Gates Community Center.

“They go to the summer workshop programs and other programs throughout the year,” said Comeaux. Crowds of potential buyers made this past weekend a particularly successful year.
“We had about a 1,000 more than last year,” Comeaux said.
“Last year we had 8,000 people come through, and this year there were at least 9,000. We had good crowds every day thanks to The Daily Iberian advertising it. I had people there at noon yesterday, and we opened at 12:30.”
Materials for sale are donated by the public. The books and other itemes are stored in anticipation of the sales event. This year the meeting room was filled with tables covered by boxes or lined with books on a wide variety of topics.
“We had well over 10,000 items,” Comeaux said. “I can’t tell you how much we sold, but it was a lot. Most of our books were a quarter, some were a dollar, but just think of how much you have to sell at a quarter to reach $8,000.”
Comeaux said supporting the library is essential in this and any community.
“The library is our cultural resource center in the parish,” she said, “and the book sale helps to make sure it continues.”
