Cormier's three scores lead NISH past Terrebonne

HOUMA -- Chris Cormier scored three touchdowns and Blake Lopez recovered a fumble for another score as New Iberia Senior High improved their chances for making the playoffs with a 30-25 non-district win Friday over Terrebonne.

Cormier, the 5-foot-11, 300 pound junior, led all rushers with 78 yards on 11 carries.

He scored on runs of 14 and six yards in the third quarter and a four yard run in the fourth as NISH went from a 16-10 deficit to a 30-10 lead before Terrebonne scored twice in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 30-25.

NISH, which entered the game with one touchdown in its last six quarters, opened the game with a Colby Delahoussaye 28 yard field goal and touchdown on a two yard fumble return by Lopez to take a 10-0 lead in the second quarter.

Terrebonne rallied with a field goal and a touchdown to cut the lead to 10-9 at halftime and the Tigers took the lead in the third quarter on a touchdown pass from Cameron Pellegrin to Roy Williams before Cormier went to work.

“We made one adjustment this week,” said NISH coach Rick Hutson, whose team improved to 7-2 with the win.

“We put big 78 (Cormier) back there.

“We just didn’t give up on running the ball and he was huge for us.”

As a team New Iberia ran for 137 yards in the contest.

Terrebonne (5-4) got a safety in the fourth quarter and a touchdown with under a minute remaining to cut the lead to 30-25 and the Tigers recovered the ensuing onsides kick but was whistled for illegal touching which gave NISH the ball and the Jackets ran out the clock for the win.

NISH quarterback Jordy Joseph completed 10-of-14 passes for 85 yards in the game.

Pellegrin led Terrebone on 13-of-31 passing for 197 yards.

The Jackets close out the regular season Friday at St. Thomas More.

Rayne 12, Erath 6

RAYNE -- Scott Curtis caught a 10-yard pass from Tyler Venable in overtime as Rayne rallied from a 6-0 third quarter deficit to beat Erath 12-6 Friday in District 5-3A.

The Wolves (1-8 overall, 1-3 district) tied the game in the fourth quarter as Tre Leon ran it in from 32 yards out. Erath (3-6, 0-4) had taken the lead just before halftime on Cole Bourque’s 49 yard run.

Leon led Rayne with 93 yards on 15 carries, Curtis caught two passes for 37 yards and Venable completed 3-of-5 passes for 86 yards.

Bourque had 55 yards rushing for Erath while Jude Cessac added 22 yards rushing and 18 yard passing.

Erath closes out the regular season Friday by playing host to North Vermilion.

E.D. White 47, Franklin 0

THIBODAUX -- Tyler Thibodeaux scored three touchdowns, Grant Chaisson added two more and E.D. White scored 41 first half points to put away Franklin 47-0 Friday in District 6-3A.

The seventh-ranked Cardinals (8-1, 4-0) scored 28 first quarter points as Chaisson went in from 14 and one yards, Thibodeaux scored on a 55 yard run and a 40 yard touchdown pass and FSH safety.

Franklin (2-7, 1-3) had trouble all night with fumbles and a shaky kicking game.

The safety came on an intentional grounding call in the end zone as punter John Nash bobbled a snap and tried to throw the ball out of the end zone.

The Hornets finish out the regular season Friday when they travel to rival West St. Mary in the annual Fire on the Bayou game.

Opelousas 20, St. Martinville 0

OPELOUSAS -- J.J. Joubert ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and Jalin Poullard and Quinton Malveaux each scored as Opelousas High beat St. Martinville 20-0 Friday in District 6-4A.

Joubert’s return covered 80 yards and gave OHS a 6-0 lead. The home-standing Tigers added two more scores in the second quarter to make the score 20-0 at halftime and they held on for the win.

Malveaux led OHS (2-7, 2-4) with 85 yards on 14 carries.

Lance Charles had 105 yards on 13 carries for SMSH (1-8, 1-4) and Skylar Delahoussaye added 95 yards on 10 totes.

St. Martinville travels to Northside to close out the regular season Friday.
