The Cyr-Gates Community Center is not high on the list of New Iberia’s scariest places, but it will be come this weekend.

Thanks to efforts coordinated through the Mayor’s After School Program, a first-time, 10-minute haunted Halloween tour is planned for the public from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

The admission fee is a cheap $1 per person, with all proceeds going for activities in the program.

A story is Thursday’s The Daily Iberian explained how children enrolled in the after-school program have worked for the past three weeks to put together the tour, which features a graveyard, a morgue, a wooded area and a “scene from Hell.”

“The kids came up with a lot of good little scares for people,” program director Krystal Boyance said. “They’re really excited.”

Their excitement is well deserved, considering children from kindergarten through 12th grade worked on putting this weekend’s fright flight in action.

The haunted house tour was open to the more than 200 children involved in the program Thursday night, so the devilish smiles they are sporting today are because they already know, firsthand, the chills in store for the rest of New Iberia.

The Mayor’s After School Program focuses on helping youngsters with homework, organizers were correct in saying a project like the haunted house teaches creativity, teamwork and thinking out loud.

A hauntingly good time awaits.
