And although trains are beneficial to our local infrastructure, connecting us with so many points of commerce in the outside world, we would like to have some assurances of passing over crossings easily during our busiest times. That’s why anyone interested in this issue should attend a meeting tonight at the Iberia Parish Courthouse.
Concerns about the railroads that run through town is nothing new. The tracks have been here for decades and New Iberia has grown up around them. That doesn’t mean railroads should have carte blanche over the passage ways through town at any time of day.

So what can local government do about it? The Iberia Parish Council formed an adhoc committee months ago, but it has yet to hold its first meeting. That meeting is at 5:30 p.m. today, so if you want to voice concerns about the railways, today is your chance.
Officials really aren’t sure how to, or even whether it can, create and enforce local regulations; the parish’s legal advisor is still looking into that.
One thing is sure, though, if the committee can help begin consistent dialogue between local residents and the railroads, good is likely to come out of it.
Railroads can be a touchy subject for some folks, but if all we do is gripe about it to each other, nothing will change. If you have legitimate problems with being held up by blocked crossings, and wish to compromise, make the meeting today. Your idea might be the one that works for all parties involved.
