It has always been about the people, said Bernice “Chic” Borel, who recently retired as the coordinator of the Solomon House Brown Bag Program.

The Solomon House, an outreach of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, held a reception for Borel on Monday to celebrate her 14 years of heading the program, which provides groceries to about 120 people every week.

“It’s amazing for a volunteer to be that dedicated,” said Ellen Nora, Solomon House executive director.

Prior to the certificate, New Iberia Mayor Hilda Curry, left, also named Borel an Admiral of the Bayou Teche.

New Iberia Mayor Hilda Curry also recognized Borel’s contributions by awarding her with the Admiral of Bayou Teche at Monday night’s celebration.

“I’m not one to make a big deal out of volunteering to get credit,” Borel told friends and family after receiving her award from the city and tokens of appreciation from the Solomon House, Our Lady of Victory Parish and her family. “I just pick up and do it.”

Borel was quick to add there are many people who have helped her over the years who never seek to be credited. “They never ask for recognition,” she said.

Before volunteering for the Solomon House in 1995, Borel worked for then BellSouth for 32 years. Her plans now are to spend time with her family and do a little traveling to get use of the new luggage Solomon House folks presented to her Monday, brown bags, of course.

Although she will likely check on things at the Solomon House from time to time, Borel said she mostly will miss the people.

“Especially the people I served, they’re like family,” she said.
