Can state jobs really 'afford' to lay off?

I know everything in the world is stressed and strained right now, but when I see articles stating that the State of Louisiana is looking to eliminate jobs, I am dumbfounded. I wish they would ask me or the several hundreds, maybe thousands of people in the state that have been laid off and still waiting for unemployment to kick in, in my case, this will be the 5th or 6th week. I lost track. Not to mention I stayed on hold for about an hour and 45 minutes just for her to tell me keep filing my claim. Um, I know that, can you please give me info that www.laworks.net can not provide? Then I applied for food stamps, emergency at that b/c I had already received my last check for the month of September. I applied 9/23/09 and received my emergency stamps (suppose to be 4 days) on 10/23/09. Thank GOD I have a mother and a father that can feed me, but what about the people that don't have that? When I called the case worker, she said she has 40 cases ahead of mine? 40??? Wow...I called HUD to inquire about applications and they told me that they would not be taking applications for at least another 2 years? What u say? What about the people that cannot afford rent, can't find a job to pay rent, and have no family/friends to fall back on? Guess the state needs to hire more people to build more homeless shelters b/c looks like they will be needed.

" You obviously weren't eligible for emergency food stamps, if you didn't receive them in 4 days. You stated you received your last check,.It probably wasn't your "only" check in the month. At least you received help. Be grateful for what you have. Go shopping! Quit whining, and bashing state workers. I have friends there. They work hard to help needy families, which is what the program is all about. Unfortunately, they see just as many greedy people trying to "beat the system". It slows down the process for all. "

" To totally annoyed....you should get ALL THE FACTS regarding your food stamp application before you complain. First of all, if you received income in the SAME month in which you applied, then you are NOT eligible to receive emergency food stamps. That is federal policy. It is quiet evident that you are NOT the only person who has been recently laid off if the worker advised you that there were 40 applications ahead of you. I have friends who work there and many of them work many extra hours and weekends(which they don't have to do) to try and.....continued "

All of us were able to get government jobs thanks to the stimulus, albeit after spending a few months making minimum wage.

I don't agree with a lot of things Obama does, but there is food on my table thanks to the stimulus. It's hard to complain about someone who feeds your family. "

" This comment is for Tom. If I or anyone else for that matter cannot whine about not being able to feed their families or money to pay bills, then tell me what should I whine about? That was dumb.I am speaking for all ther people that ARE working Americans, but have fallen on hard times that can reap the benefits of their hard work, now that they need it. EVERYONE needs help. Recession is color blind. And sorry to disappoint you that I am not a racist Republican, bu "

" Two points. It is unlikely that there will be any "layoffs". What is more likely is eliminating open positions through attrition and moving people around. Second, there are many, many people in state government that have nothing to do with your benefits. We have more state employees than states much larger that Louisiana, and we pay for it in taxes and in doing without those things that those taxes should be paying for. Good luck. "

" Don’t worry about unemployment. When Obama finishes with health care, cap and trade, determines how many troops are needed in Afghanistan, settled the Israeli/Palestine issue, gives GMAC a third bailout, and creates world peace he will get around to the economy.

Besides, haven’t you heard that he saved a million jobs, and that the recession is over?

You need to stop whining because you have no food or money. That’s un-American and makes you sound like a racist republican when you disagree with democratic politics. "

He has a lot on his mind now trying to make a decision whether or not to send more troops to Afghanistan! He'll get around to providing all those jobs that the STIMULUS money is going produce!
You better hope you get EXTENDED benefits!
Nancy Pelosi is working on jobs too at her vineyard in California. Maybe she will need some grape pickers at harvest time. "
