After a three and out by the Gators offense, the Panthers got the ball on the AES 42-yard line and Landry found the end zone again on a 20-yard touchdown run with 8:31 to go in the first quarter. Renard tacked on another 2-point conversion to make the score 16-0.
Ascension Episcopal (2-6, 0-4) could not manage a first down and was forced to punt again on its next possession and Tyler Hotard returned the punt 43 yards to put DHS 22-0 ahead in the first quarter. After a successful extra point the score was 23-0 and a number of the Delcambre starters were done for the night.
“When we are playing in these types of conditions I do not want anyone to get hurt,” Delcambre said after the game. “This was a good opportunity to let our younger kids play tonight.”
Delcambre High School’s younger kids had an impressive drive in the second quarter when they started the DHS 34-yard line and marched to a touchdown with 5:34 remaining in the second quarter. Jace Dore, a freshman running back, set up the touchdown after he broke loose on a 49-yard toss sweep.
Sophomore wide receiver Samuel Derise scored on a three-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Bourque.
Each team scored once in the second half to make the final score 37-6.
The Panthers play host to Gueydan next Friday. The fifth-ranked Bears (8-1 overall) lead District 7-A with a 4-0 record.
“We are playing really good right now and the District 7-A championship will be settled next week,” Delcambre said.
“We always play Gueydan real tough and next week will not be any different.
“They have a really good offense and their running back is super.”
AES head coach Randy Johnson said he is proud of his team despite the defeat.
“This is our first year playing varsity football and we will get better with time,” he said.
“We are getting the experience that we need and next year we will be OK.
“I am proud of these guys.”
