Jeanerette coach charged with having sex with student

The head basketball coach at Jeanerette Senior High School was arrested Wednesday on charges of having sex with a 17-year-old student.

Dwayne Bernard, 29, of New Iberia, was booked into the Iberia Parish Jail on 17 counts of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile and three counts of prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student.

Investigators said the relationship began in August 2008 and most of the sexual activity occurred at Bernard’s home in New Iberia.

Bernard is being held on $50,000 bond.
