A place to shop in area town

Published/Last Modified on Friday, October 9, 2009 2:06 PM CDT

Living in the “big city” of New Iberia, there are many times when the convenience of stores available within the city limits make me more than a little spoiled, especially when it comes to everyday items.

My family and I live in the Southport neighborhood, which sits off East Admiral Doyle Drive, almost catercorner from New Iberia Senior High.

The drive to any number of grocery stores or appliance outlets is literally minutes away. Not that the distance stops me or my wife from saying things are too far when we realize we’re only missing one ingredient for a complete supper. We mostly choose to go without because a five-minute one-way trip is just too far.

So it’s nice to read in The Daily Iberian that Shawn Sigur’s new business in Delcambre offers that town’s residents a chance to be so picky. Sigue recently opened Shawn’s Cajun Meats, a meat market where customers also can pick up a head of lettuce, an onion, a gallon of milk or a family pack of chicken. The option is welcomed by local shoppers who have gone without many shopping outlets since Hurricane Rita.

“Shawn’s is the start of something for sure,” Mayor Carol Broussard Broussard said in Thursday’s newspaper. “It’s about the convenience of having the little things right here in town.”

Lifelong Delcambre resident Jim Wiggens even joked his wife has been more affected by the community’s lack of grocery store since she is the primary shopper.

Hopefully, now the Wiggens family and rest of Delcambre has a couple more options when it comes to running out of the house and picking up one last thing.
