High school football’s second season gets underway this week as all Teche Area teams enter district play in week six gearing up for runs at postseason play.

Area games this week are highlighted by two teams that don’t have much respect across the state and a battle of statewide statistical leaders.

New Iberia at Comeaux

The District 4-5A opener for both teams this year has quietly flown under the radar. Neither NISH (5-0) nor Comeaux (4-1) received any votes in the latest high school polls despite their combined nine wins this year in 10 games.

New Iberia quarterback Jordy Joseph continues his incredible statistical run this year, having completed 51 of 69 passes (74 percent) for 828 yards and 13 touchdowns with only two interceptions through five games. Delario Austin continues to be his favorite receiver with 15 pass receptions for 215 yards.

Comeaux defeated Patterson 27-19 last week. PHS is ranked fifth in Class 3A.

Westgate at Carencro

Two teams that have struggled at times this year meet in another District 4-5A opener Friday. The Tigers (3-2), who got crushed 33-2 last week against Northside, take on the Bears (1-4).

WHS quarterback Diontae Spencer has rushed for 321 yards and passed for 254 yards through five games.

Carencro, which won its first game of the year two weeks ago against Lafayette High, lost 49-21 to East St. John last week. Through five games, the Bears have given up an average of 39.4 points per game.

Catholic High vs. Patterson

The District 6-3A opener for both teams was moved from Patterson High School to Guidry Stadium on the campus of Nicholls because of problems with Patterson’s home field.

The game features three of the state’s statistical leaders. Patterson’s Kenny Hilliard has rushed for 1,086 yards and 12 touchdowns this year, third in the state in rushing yards, while Catholic High quarterback Taylor Bullock has completed 90 of 143 passes for 1,349 yards and 16 touchdown, third in the state in passing yards.

Catching the majority of Bullock’s passes is Devin Boutte, who is the leading receiver in the state with 31 catches for 613 yards.

Loreauville at Ville Platte

The teams open District 6-2A play this week.

Loreauville enters the game tied atop the league standings with Jeanerette and Sacred Heart, each with 4-1 overall marks. Ville Platte is tied with Port Barre at 3-2 after five games. Opelousas Catholic, with a 2-3 record, is the only team in the district which doesn’t have a winning record after five games.

The Tigers bring a two-headed running attack in the game featuring B.J. Greene and Nick Julien. Greene is the 16th leading rusher with 680 yards and nine touchdowns, returning last week after battling an ankle injury for two weeks. Julien has 377 yards and backed up Greene when he was injured.

Ville Platte, after losing the first two weeks of the season, has won three straight, including a 27-0 shutout win over East Beauregard last week.

Port Barre at Jeanerette

Jeanerette’s Anthony Williams, after a 194 yard effort last week, has 1,014 yards rushing this year, which is fourth in the state. The Tigers open district play by playing host to Port Barre, which lost 39-33 to Catholic High of Pointe Coupee last week.

Hanson at Delcambre

The District 7-A opener for both teams sees the Tigers (0-5) travel to Delcambre (3-2). The Tigers have struggled this year, scoring a grand total of 31 points through five games while giving up 175.

Delcambre crushed North Central 68-20 last week behind Jorey Renard’s 314-yard, four-touchdown game last week. Tyler Hotard also rushed for 117 yards and two TDs on only six rushes. Renard’s effort is the best single-game mark in the state this year.

Franklin at Berwick

The Hornets (1-4) open District 6-3A play at Berwick (2-3).

Franklin has lost three straight since beating St. Martinville 7-2 in week two. Berwick beat Hanson last week 33-0 to end a two-game losing skid.

E.D. White at West St. Mary

The Wolfpack (0-4) had an open date last week and haven’t played since losing 42-7 to Erath two weeks ago. It’s homecoming week for West St. Mary.

E.D. White suffered its first loss of the season last week, 18-14 to Brusly.

Erath at Notre Dame

The Bobcats (3-2) open District 5-3A play at Notre Dame.

The Pioneers (5-0) are ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.

Erath lost 21-7 to Church Point last week while Notre Dame crushed Eunice 35-7.

Beau Chene at St. Martinville

The Gators (2-3 overall, 0-1 District 6-4A) are hoping to rebound from last week’s 35-7 loss to Cecilia in its district opener.

St. Martinville (0-5, 0-2) is still looking for its first win of the year and celebrates homecoming this week.

Highland Baptist at Breaux Bridge Christian

The Bears (2-5) open the weekend tonight against Louisiana Christian School Athletic Association leader Breaux Bridge Christian (7-0) at Clark Field in Lafayette.

The first time the teams met this year, Breaux Bridge Christian beat HBCS 61-6.

Despite a 2-5 record, Highland is tied with Natchitoches Christian for the fourth and final playoff spot in the LCSAA. If the two teams remain tied at the end of the season, the tiebreaker will be point differential.
