The prep football season reaches the midway point this week as most Teche Area teams finish up the non-district part of their schedules looking towards the beginning of district play next week.

Weekend games start tonight as Delcambre plays host to North Central and Highland Baptist plays host to Harvest Time Christian. Franklin and West St. Mary have open dates this week.

The NISH Yellow Jackets, 4-0 through the first four games, take a major step up in competition this week when they play host to former district rival Lafayette High.

The Lions (2-2) dropped a 31-28 decision to Carencro last week but Lafayette’s season so far has been interesting. The Lions have lost to both Class 5A schools they have faced (Terrebonne, Carencro) but have beaten the two Class 3A schools they have faced (Eunice, Cohen).

NISH quarterback Jordy Joseph (58 attempts, 42 completions, 680 yards, 13 touchdowns) finally joined the statewide leaders in passing this week after just missing out the first four weeks of the season. Joseph is ranked 19th on the list after four weeks.

Westgate at Northside

The Tigers (3-1) enter the game off a 27-6 crushing of Eunice High last week. Diontae Spencer accounted for 169 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns. For the year, the WHS senior has rushed for 317 yards rushing and thrown for 231 yards.

Northside (2-2) has won two straight, including last week’s 47-9 win over Opelousas, after opening the season with two straight losses.

Catholic High at Plaquemine

The Panthers (3-1) hit the road this week after two straight home games and travel to 3-1 Plaquemine.

CHS quarterback Taylor Bullock (76-of-118 passing for 1,145 yards, 14 touchdowns and two interceptions) is the second leading quarterback in the state after the fourth week, trailing only Evangel’s David Dee Duron (1,237 yards and 14 TDs).

Catholic High’s Devin Boutte (24 catches, 501 yards, 6 TDs) is the leading receiver in the state, ahead of Evangel’s Thomas Bridgewater (21-482, 5 TDs).

Plaquemine beat Berwick 47-14 last week.

Loreauville at Vermilion Catholic

The Tigers (3-1) travel to Abbeville to take on former district foe Vermilion Catholic (2-2) which has lost two straight games after opening the season with two wins.

Despite not playing a lot because of an ankle injury, Loreauville’s B.J. Greene is still in the top 20 in the state in rushing after four weeks (70-570). Nick Julien (48-377) has proven to be a workhorse in the backup role.

Northwest at Jeanerette

The Tigers (3-1) look to continue their winning ways against the Raiders (1-3) who have lost three straight after opening the season with a win over North Central.

Jeanerette’s Anthony Williams (82-870, 12 TDs) is the third leading rusher in the state after Homer’s Tony Casey (1,004 yards) and Patterson’s Kenny Hilliard (922 yards).

Williams is also the second leading scorer in the state with 84 points after four weeks, trailing only Pearl River’s James Gillum (86 points).

Erath at Church Point

The Bobcats (3-1) have thrived under new coach Destin Dieterich through the first four weeks but the schedule doesn’t get any easier for the team starting this week at Church Point (3-1).

The Bears rolled through the first two games of the year before being crushed by Parkview Baptist in week three but came back to beat Rayne last week.

St. Martinville at Breaux Bridge

The Tigers (0-4 overall, 0-1 District 5-4A) are still looking for their first win of the year. With the exception of week two, a 7-2 loss to Franklin, SMSH has given up an average of 42 points per game in its other three defeats.

Breaux Bridge (2-2, 1-0) opened district play last week with a 40-7 rout over rival Cecilia.

Hanson at Berwick

Another team looking for its first win of the year, the Hanson Tigers (0-4) travel to Berwick Friday.

HMS dropped a 24-12 decision to Merryville last week while Berwick (1-3) lost to Plaquemine last week, 47-14.
