Figure out that thing you do for community and do it

In my last column I mentioned Cliff Williams and his annual free “Cuts For Kids” event at Impressive Cuts and Beauty Salon in New Iberia. I wanted to tell you more about Cliff and the many people who are responsible for keeping this effort going for four years.

When I come across something like this, where regular people are finding ways to help others in their own special way, I want to spread the good news all over town.

The good news is there are so many people out there doing it in their own special way, but the bad news is we don’t know who they are and what’s special about it. If you spot people who are doing their special thing, pass it on. Take hold of your special gift and pass it on. You know what I’m talking about, that thing you do.

Cliff and friends are passing it on. For about five years Cliff has cut hair at the nursing home on Admiral Doyle Drive. Cliff and his friends from LOVE will get together in November for a “Coats For Kids “ project. LOVE takes kids and their families on shopping trips to Wal-Mart for school supplies every year. I went on one with them the day before school started. Cliff tells me there will be another “Blessing” coming up in December. He won’t tell me what it is. Maybe Santa Claus is coming.

Cliff credits Marcus Bryant and Loine Collins of Omega, a fraternal organization, for starting him off with “ Cuts For Kids.” They wanted to pay him but he does it for free because he wants to give back to the community for the help they have given him.

Cliff and his staff gave haircuts to 167 children. That’s a lot of cuts and styles. The girls get styles. It’s a girl thing.

He had help from some good friends, Gidget Cheatin, Rosella Davis, Angelle Ozenne, Jacinta Smith, Kendra Andrews, and Nakeeya Londo. Darren Simon and Keisha Spencer helped out by keeping things organized.

Cliff’s mom and dad, Brough and Daisy Clifton kept everyone well nourished with lots of good food. Standing all day makes you hungry and you get sore feet, but Cliff says they are glad to do it for the children. Divine Diva’s, Iberia Back to School and Justify Ladies, helped with the project.

Speaking of Divine Diva’s, Vera Lyn, the popular British singing star of the second World War has at age 92 has reached the top of the record charts in Britain, beating out the Beatle’s. Dame Vera, whose remastered record album, “We’ll Meet Again-The Very Best Songs of Vera Lyn” becoming the oldest person to ever reach the top of the charts in the U.K. She is celebrating on the French coast with champagne and caviar and is staggered at the news. Hooray for oldies everywhere.
