Catholic High receiver/ running back Thomas Theriot and Westgate High defensive back Jacoby Colbert came up with big plays that impressed Teche Area football fans voting in a weekly Internet poll sponsored by Dauterive Hospital and The Daily Iberian.

Theriot and Colbert each claimed landslide wins in fan voting for high school football Players of the Week for the third week of the high school football season.

Theriot, who accumulated 248 all-purpose yards in a narrow 34-28 CHS loss to St. Louis, garnered 53 percent of the vote for Offensive Player of the Week.

His next closest competition was Westgate quarterback Diontae Spencer with 17 percent of the vote. Jeanerette running back Anthony Williams earned 13 percent of the vote, NISH quarterback Jordy Joseph had 10 percent of the vote and Loreauville running back Nicholas Julien had 7 percent of the vote.

Theriot had eight receptions for 97 yards, 14 carries for 58 yards, a 57-yard kick return, a 36-yard punt return, completed a pass and scored twice.

Spencer led WHS on the game-winning drive as the Tigers upset third-ranked Archbishop Shaw, 18-14. Spencer finished the night with 116 passing yards and a touchdown, and scored on a fourth-and-goal play from the 1 to give Westgate the lead with less than a minute and a half to play.

Williams rushed for 229 yards and four touchdowns in helping Jeanerette beat Avoyelles, 26-0. Joseph went 7-for-10 for 141 yards and four TDs as New Iberia beat St. Martinville 44-8. Julien carried 27 times for 130 yards and a TD off the bench in Loreauville’s 13-0 win over West St. Mary.

Colbert, like Spencer, played a key role in his team’s upset win. In addition to catching a touchdown pass, he intercepted Shaw quarterback Andrew Starkey and returned it to the Shaw 23 after the Tigers had taken the lead with 1:26 to go.

He earned 66 percent of the fan vote to nab defensive honors.

Jorey Renard of Delcambre, who helped the Panthers beat Elton 48-20 last week with his offensive and defensive efforts, was next with 34 percent of the fan vote.
