Disenchanted! Disappointed! Disgusted! By TomI must say that as a citizen of this country I am disenchanted, disappointed and disgusted by the recent debate over healthcare reform and the behavior of the people of this country and this particular community. I thought people in this country were more mature than they really are, however I am not surprised at the response to many over the healthcare issue. How many people can even explain what the whole care reform would mean to them. I'm not talking about what Rush Limbaugh says it will mean, I'm not talking about what David Vitter says it will mean, I'm not talking about what Bill O'reilly, Michelle Malkin, Glen Beck, Thomas Sowell, Joe Wilson say it will mean. I'm talking about what the President has actually said. The way it is being put forth is that every American will be forced to accept government sponsored healthcare. I never heard the President say that. I did hear him say the government would provide healthcare that would give citizens another, and perhaps cheaper, choice than their current healthcare providers if they so choose to participate. Also, because it is cheaper it might force competing healthcare providers to go down on their price which in turn will make it more affordable to those who continue to use their existing healthcare provider. Nobody will be forced to do anything. I did hear that the government may tell businesses and companies that they must provide healthcare for their employees. If said companies and businesses did this already it would be a non-issue. If I had owned a business I would do everything in my power to see that my employees received some form of healthcare coverage. Not only would it make for happy employees, but it would make for healthier employees meaning less time missed for illness and less money spent towards employees who have to go on disability because they had no access to preventative care. Normally when people start arguing against too much government interference it is usually because they are doing things they shouldn't be doing. Why would the government need to interfere or even want to interfere if people were doing what they were supposed to be doing in treating their fellow citizens with respect in the first place. The federal government gave state and local governments all the time in the world to implement integration during the civil rights movement. Eisenhower and Kennedy only got involved when the violence began to give the U.S. a black-eye in the sight of the world. And just like today there was a public uproar over integration. One of the things that was going around was that integration would mean that young black boys would want to rape young white girls if they went to school together. People today would say that is absurd. Politicians of the day and people who disagreed with integration used this scare tactic to play on people's ignorance to push forward their agenda. You can see how people can twist the truth to spread panic. Unfortunately things don't change and that is scary. Is the Presidents healthcare reform the be all end all to the healthcare problem in this country? Probably not. There will never be a system that will suit or service everyone. You do have to give him credit for at least trying to make good on his campaign promises and even work through bipartisanship even though people are fighting him every step of the way. I've heard everyone say how bad his healthcare reform is going to be, but what I haven't heard from all the venters is a workable alternative. Why don't all the people ranting at town hall meetings and in this forum come up with a healthcare solution that will help a majority of hardworking American citiziens have access to affordable healthcare. I would like to see it. I work for a national retailer that makes sure you work just less than enough hours so you don't receive benefits. Is that fair? What's the solution? |
