A Tale of Two Football Teams

Before you read this story, understand that this has nothing to do with sour grapes over the Cajuns' loss to LSU on Saturday. I will say that the Cajuns clearly scored a safety and the moronic refs somehow spotted the ball outside the 1-yard line, and this was after what I believe to have been a TD scored a few plays earlier by the Cajuns, but again, home cookin' in Tiger Stadium is pretty tough to overcome....pretty bad when an SEC team needs the home cookin' to beat a measly little Sun Belt team.

So the Cajuns went down I-10 and collected their big fat check for being the latest in a long line of non-conference patsies to play in Tiger Stadium. Somehow following this game, the Tigers went up in the AP polls...after beating a Sun Belt team. Yeah, I get that Washington beat USC (I also get that USC seems to lose a conference game every year they should win by 20 or more....see Oregon State and Stanford for examples), but LSU has played really quite flat in three games against supposedly lesser opponents. The majority of LSU fans are so blindly ignorant to the reality of NCAA football that they could somehow rationalize that not only do they deserve to be ranked number 7, but even higher, simply because they are in the SEC. Don't get me wrong, LSU has a great coach and a good team, but for the love of God, put down the Kool-Aid. LSU fans have a reputation (deservedly) for being among the most obnoxious in all of sports. My wife shared a story with me she read where a UL fan from Lafayette took his young son to Tiger Stadium the last time LSU and UL played in 2006 and his son, a proud fan of the Cajuns, was wearing his Cajuns jersey....grown men, clearly intoxicated GROWN MEN were making obscene gestures and telling this young boy (younger than 10) how he "sucks." The father of this boy showed restraint (something I would not do....I would likely get arrested for my response to that) and just turned the other cheek. I read a story on the webpage of LSU’s own student newspaper about how two LSU students posed as Alabama fans at a game last year and were groped, had their camera damaged, had beer cans thrown at them, and the website even had video proof of the drunken, obnoxious, self-absorbed behavior of the LSU fans. Saturday's game was no different, even players got into the act with cheap shots and pushing and shoving long after the whistle blew....before you talk about how the Cajuns can't take it… yada yada yada, well they did take it and came back for more until the end of the game. The point here is that LSU fans have some ridiculous complex that makes them rationalize that the Tigers are the best team in the land this year and every year for that matter. They believe they are superior in every facet of basically everything. They believe they are the best team in the best conference, that Les Miles is the best coach, and according to one blogger on the TDA website, they believe that Les Miles would never leave NCAA Football Nirvana in Baton Rouge because he somehow has this overwhelming loyalty to LSU because they are somehow superior in everything and therefore no amount of money or career growing challenge could ever draw him away from LSU. Of course they thought the same thing of Nick Saban who until he left was described in the same way but that he chose to leave makes him somehow a lesser person...how dare he leave LSU? It's the best job in all of the NCAA, perhaps all of FOOTBALL, period. That's what they believe. I am not sure if it is something in the water in Baton Rouge, maybe they haven't gotten a dose of reality, even outside of football, but then again the world in Baton Rouge revolves around football and they think the whole world for that matter, revolves around football in Baton Rouge as well. Again, save your sour grapes BS because I don't really care. Cajuns fans are just as loyal to their team as LSU fans but Cajuns fans are also realistic...about a number of things...such as:

Academically speaking (LSU fans may know that better as "book learnin' ") UL is superior to LSU in a NUMBER of categories, including but not limited to Computer Science, Engineering and Arcitechture (GO TEAM BEAU SOLEIL and TEAM CAJUNBOT)

LSU is a superior party school....congrats on that. You make the beer suppliers in the greater (and I use that term very loosely) Baton Rouge area quite happy.

LSU football players past and present hold a number of records....criminal records, that is (Ryan Perilloux, Cecil Collins, the list is LONG)...you all should be very proud.

Cajuns fans welcome opposing teams and show hospitality. LSU fans make obnixious gestures to eight-year-olds and the stadium smells like urine. LSU fans are obsessed with football....in some instances, rightfully so, but there comes a point where you need to act like you have been there before.

At the end of the day, UL Lafayette, will never be a superior football team to LSU...and the best part is that Cajuns fans will say that before LSU fans, but LSU fans will say it over and over and over again, because they have this undying need to say how much everybody else (especially UL) sucks and how they are superior....there's a diagnosis for that, and it fits nicely...it's called "Inferiority Complex." How sad that a team as mighty as LSU can't muster a fanbase with REMOTELY CLOSE to the level of CLASS Cajuns fans show every week at home and on the road.

One more thing....that WAS a safety. You know it, and I know it...the whole world knows it. It's all good though because all this does is add to the mythical level of this supposed superiority LSU's football fans feel their team has over everything and everybody related to NCAA football....

" I grew up in south Louisiana, and yet somehow I chose NOT to go to LSU despite getting in. Crazy, right? Instead, I'll be at a football game this Saturday where upwards of 200,000 will be on my campus for the 200-somethingth consecutive sellout. It doesn't take a genius to know that no college stadium has that capacity, but seeing that y'all are Tiger apologists I'll remind you of that fact. I've experienced Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night, as well as games at the Big House, ND Stadium, et al., and guess what? Tiger Stadium ain't that special. "

" Sorry "geaux away" but it sounds like someone is upset because they don't have the fan base LSU has. For the record, the waiting list for LSU season tickets; numerous sell-outs; tens of thousands of tailgaters (some who don't even have tickets, but come out to support the team); dedicated traveling fan base -- all prove the sincerity of the LSU fan base and Tiger Nation. I am sorry for you, that you cannot experience something like Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night with the awe and excitement of true LSU fans. There is nothing I rather do than be-at-that-game-this-Saturday. "

It's an energy that can't be explained, only experienced. AND if you're not wearing purple and/or gold...it can be intimidating and maybe even scary. It's a place you can forget yourself, your troubles, your realization that you are not even a blip on the radar and become part of something incredible. Last second victories, memorable battles, heritage and tradition...it's like the Roman Colosseum in Baton Rouge.

Here come your LSU FIGHTING TIGERS!!!!! "

" I swear if I hear one more person tell me how incredible Tiger Stadium is on a Saturday night, I'm gonna lose it. A bunch of drunk Wal-Mart fans who wear funny colors and maintain that there is a mass officiating conspiracy against all of their sports teams is nothing new in the SEC or sports in general. Actually and sincerely caring about a team or school is a far cry from south-Louisiana LSU fans, all riled up and wearing purple (purple? really?), who are governed by mob mentality and the desire for social acceptance rather than actual fanhood. One day UL may have a huge comeback and have more great times. "
