A state football power comes to town and four local athletes look to stay in the top half of individual state rankings as Week 3 of the prep football season gets underway Friday.

Longtime state football power Archbishop Shaw takes the ride to New Iberia Friday night to take on Westgate High at Lloyd G. Porter Stadium while Loreauville’s B.J. Greene, currently fourth in the state in rushing with 443 yards, looks to increase that total as the Tigers travel to West St. Mary.

Another top rusher in the state, Jeanerette’s Anthony Williams, currently third with 455 yards, and the rest of the Tigers travel to Moreauville to battle Avoyelles High. The area’s leading passer, Catholic High’s Taylor Bullock, currently second in the state with 736 yards, looks to continue his passing ways as the Panthers play host to St. Louis High of Lake Charles.

Shaw at Westgate

The Eagles (2-0) rushed for 217 yards in a 15-3 victory over Fontainebleau last week, led by junior running back Lawrence Breaux, who had 120 yards and a touchdown.

Shaw, which has been in the last three Class 4A state titles games, also has a standout defensive player in Elliot Porter, a 6-3, 285 lb senior who has committed to LSU.

Westgate (1-1) suffered a 35-14 loss to Patterson last week, with Kenny Hilliard rushing for 261 yards on 44 attempts for the Lumberjacks.

St. Louis at Catholic High

Bullock, who trails only Evangel’s David Dee Duron (745 yards) statewide in passing yards after two weeks, leads the Panthers (2-0) against the Saints (1-1).

St. Louis took a 27-25 loss to Cecilia last week after pounding Mansfield 38-7 in Week 1.

CHS receiver Devin Boutte (13 catches, 328 yards) is the second-leading receiver in the state behind DeQuincy’s Caleb Kellogg (14-342).

Loreauville at W. St. Mary

Greene, who had 293 yards and five touchdowns last week against Hanson, and the rest of the Tigers (1-1) take the field against the Wolfpack (0-2) who gave up 301 yards and three touchdowns last week to Williams as Jeanerette beat WSM 30-14.

Offensively West St. Mary has struggled this year, scoring 14 points last week and only 7 in Week 1 against Kaplan.

Jeanerette at Avoyelles

Williams, who has the state’s best single game mark this season with last week’s 301-yard effort, trails only Hilliard (483 yards) and Iota’s Trey St. Andre (482) in rushing yards in the state.

His five touchdowns and two 2-point conversions also put him in the top 16 in the state in scoring this year.

Avoyelles (0-2) lost to Cecilia in Week 1 and to Church Point last week.

Delcambre at Elton

The Panthers (1-1) look to get back on the winning track after dropping a 28-12 decision to Lake Arthur last week, while the Indians (1-1) beat East Beauregard last week, 27-20.

Delcambre’s Tyler Hotard has 199 yards and two touchdowns and Drey Landry has 141 yards and three scores through two weeks.

Franklin at Kaplan

The Hornets (1-1) will be true road warriors this year with only three home games scheduled in 2009. Last week’s 7-2 win over St. Martinville was one of those home games.

Franklin takes to the road this week to battle Kaplan (2-0) and quarterback Marc Constable, who moved to the position from wide receiver last year.

Through two games, Constable has been responsible for eight touchdowns, four rushing, two passing, one receiving and one on a punt return.

Franklin counters with running back Tremayne Johnson, who has 170 yards rushing.

FSH quarterback Markel Jenkins has passed for 140 yards.

Vermilion Catholic at Erath

Homecoming at Erath High finds the Bobcats playing host to Vermilion Catholic.

Erath (0-2) lost to longtime rival Catholic High last week while VC (2-0) beat Hamilton Christian 25-7.

Hanson at Lake Arthur

The Tigers, 0-2 with losses to Ascension Catholic and Loreauville, look to get into the win column for the first time this year against Lake Arthur (2-0), which has beaten Hamilton Christian and Delcambre in the first two weeks of the year.
