A pair of Westgate High School football players were chosen by Teche Area football fans to be the Dauterive Hospital/Daily Iberian Players of the Week for the first week of the high school football season after the Tigers upset then-second ranked Breaux Bridge 29-21 last week.

Westgate quarterback Diontae Spencer received 45 percent of the vote, edging Catholic High quarterback Taylor Bullock with 36 percent of the vote, for Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Players are nominated by fans following each week’s games at The Daily Iberian’s Web site, www.iberianet.com. The top nominees are then selected by the sports staff of The Daily Iberian for inclusion in an Internet poll that runs from Monday afternoon into Thursday afternoon of the week following those games.

The votes are then tallied, with the players who receive the most votes on offense and defense named Players of the Week. A special Player of the Week T-shirt sponsored by Dauterive Hospital and The Daily Iberian is presented to the players with the most votes.

Spencer completed nine of 13 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 80 yards on 12 carries in his team’s season-opening win against one of the top defensive teams in the state.

Bullock completed 21 of 31 passes for 401 yards and six touchdowns as Catholic High beat Jeanerette 63-24 to open the season.

New Iberia Senior High quarterback Jordy Joseph (12-for-15, 172 yards, 4 TDs in a 41-6 win over Tara) received 11 percent of the vote, and Loreauville running back B.J. Greene (150 yards, 3 TDs) received 8 percent of the vote.

Tyler Hotard of Delcambre, Devin Boutte and Grant Quinlan of Catholic High and Denarius Antoine of Westgate also were among players nominated for offensive honors.

WHS linebacker Shawn Benjamin was a runaway winner for Defensive Player of the Week honors in the fan vote, receiving 61 percent of the vote after returning an interception for a touchdown and sacking the Breaux Bridge quarterback three times.

Kyle Lamothe, who had two fumble recoveries in New Iberia’s win, received 22 percent of the vote, while Torry Wilson of Westgate, who had an interception in the end zone and broke up a point-after touchdown pass attempt, received 17 percent of the vote.

" Great Job Guys! Do what we know Westgate is capable of, too bad we could not vote for the entire team. Defense and Offense just have faith and confidence because you all can go all the way! Tell the coaches the fans know that, so they need to wake up and smell the end zone. "
