CYPREMORT POINT -- Several people were beaming with satisfaction at Kay-Cee Saltwater Fishing Rodeo headquarters here Monday afternoon, even those who knew they would go home empty-handed from Quintana Canal.

There was genuine excitement aboard the boat High C skippered by Rob Duhon of Charenton, whose craft was the last one to tie to the bulkhead before the scales closed at 3 p.m. Duhon, who was fishing with his wife Valerie and stepdaughter Morgan Billiot, had a big drum in the ice chest, one that weighed 25.0 pounds but not quite big enough to beat the 33.8-pounder his wife weighed in Saturday in the Inside Division.

David Myers of Cade showed up in his 21-foot long Express “Light-headed II” with an ice chest full of four limits of redfish after fishing that day with three others, including Davin Myers of Cade and Tyler Osborne of Youngsville. The skipper and his crew hit the redfish jackpot at Nickel Reef, he said, knowing full well none could be entered in the Runabout Division.

Their consolation? David Myers and Tyler Osborne swept the division’s white trout category with the captain taking the first two places.

Otherwise, it was a fairly slow third and final day around the scales. Most of the individual races had been settled before the second day of the three-day event.

For example, Scott Segura of New Iberia started running away from the pack Saturday when he stuck five fish on the leaderboard in the Kids Division. Segura, 12, a student at Iberia Middle School, finished with three winning fish -- a 1.43-pound croaker, a 5.41-pound flounder and a 3.30-pound speckled trout after fishing the first two days with his father Chad Segura in their 20-foot long Hydra-Sport “Reel Trouble.”

The younger angler, who enjoys playing baseball, also finished with two second-place fish to win Best All-Around Fisherman with 541 points and finish ahead of Max Derise, 189, and Bailey Hagan, 112.

“I’ve been trying to win for, like, three years straight,” he said.

He got his chance and he took advantage of it in his two days of action.

“Saturday they were biting more. We got an early start,” he said.

The Inside Division’s Best All-Around Fisherman was Nick Bourgeois, who finished with one fish on the final leaderboard, a second-place sheepshead at 3.66 pounds.

Karl Rouly won the Boat Captain’s Award in the Inside Division while fishing aboard the 181⁄2-foot long Sea Hawk “Miss Ellie Voodoo.”

Rouly, Brady LaRive and Kyle Rouly fished “long hours” each day and it paid off, Karl Rouly said about winning his first boat title.

“It feels good,” he said, adding he was pleasantly surprised to win with 187 points. The division’s winning boat was followed in the standings by Black Express, 168, and Getem Bow, 166.

LaRive said, with a laugh, “I had two fish on the board (eventually bumped off) so he owes me some of that championship.”

A “two-man team” won it all in the Runabout Division, which had an extremely low turnout.

Ryan LaGrange of Youngsville skippered the division’s winning boat “Always Somethin’,” a 24-foot Robalo, on his way to capturing the Boat Captain’s Award.

Brock Daigle of New Iberia led the way with all of their fish on the final leaderboard -- six -- with first-place king mackerel at 22.02 pounds, jack crevalle at 2.43 pounds and Spanish mackerel at 2.57 pounds.

“It feels good to win,” Daigle said. “I don’t know how many boats came weigh in - but I hope next year there’s more competition.

“We just fished the Saturday. We stayed in South Marsh Island. We have a certain platform we go to that holds nice king mackerel,” he said.

“I’m just happy the boat ran good, the water was good and we had a good time. It was the most fun we’ve ever had,” LaGrange said.

Then he echoed his fishing partner’s sentiment and he said, “We want more people to compete.”
