Five men wearing ski masks robbed the Best Western in New Iberia Thursday, stealing hundreds of dollars from a front desk clerk and a guest before locking them in a bathroom, the authorities said.

The early morning robbery appeared to be well organized, the hotel’s manager said. Armed with handguns, the suspects reportedly barged into the hotel about 4:30 a.m. — after security had gone home for the night.

Some of the men entered the lobby through the front doors while others came in from the back, said Ann Haynes, the hotel’s general manager.

“(One victim) said they seemed to know exactly what they were doing,” Haynes said.

Both of the entrances were unlocked, and Haynes said the robbery prompted the hotel to re-evaluate its security. She said the security guard would stay on duty through the morning hours beginning Thursday night.

Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office officials obtained surveillance footage of the suspects, though it was not clear whether it would be useful in identifying the suspects. Haynes said the victims could only make out the eyes of the men through the ski masks.

One of the victims, a man Haynes said had just returned from Iraq, was working at a computer in the lobby when the men came in pointing their handguns. The men took several hundred dollars from his wallet, said Capt. Wendell Raborn, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman. They also demanded money from the cash register.

Raborn would not say how much was taken from the hotel — he called the amount “substantial” — but Haynes said 85 rooms were occupied that night, though many paid with credit card. The robbers forced the clerk and the guest to a bathroom, told them not to leave and locked them in, authorities said.

Before leaving, they apparently yanked the phone lines from their sockets and removed the wires to credit card machines.

Haynes said the guest somehow managed to escape from the bathroom and surveyed the scene before telling the clerk it was clear to come out. They telephoned the authorities and deputies responded to the hotel on Louisiana 14 about 4:45 a.m., Raborn said.

Investigators dusted for fingerprints and reviewed the surveillance footage. Raborn said the men could have driven away in a gray Buick spotted near the hotel around the time of the robbery.

Haynes said the guest checked out of the hotel Thursday morning. The clerk, she said, is “shaken up” but plans to return to work right away.

The Sheriff’s Office is looking for five black men in connection with the robbery.

Anyone with information about the alleged crime is asked to call 369-3711.

" I work at a hotel in the area of the BW. And I really wish that instead of people complaining about what the Sherrif's office is or isnt doing, how about try and help. I help provide a service to this town. Is it fair that I have to be afraid to go to work because somebody knows who did this but wont say anything. I am greatful that nobody got hurt. But, if people dont come forward and say something it could happen agan. it could be my hotel. Somebody could get hurt. "

You're probably a Sid supporter. Maybe if he was still here he would have shown up and placed his comb in his hair and solved the case instantly. "

" THESE WERE NOT LOCAL CRIMINALS.

THEY ROBBED A HOTEL IN OPELOUSAS AT 1:30, THEN ROBBED IN CARENCRO.

THEN THEY HIT TWO IN LAFAYETTE , THEN THE BW IN NEW IBERIA. OUR SHERIFF DEPT IS THE ONLY ONE WHO ASKED FOR HELP IN IDENTIFING THEM.

SO QUIT THE SHERIFF DEPT BASHING.

THANK GOD THEY DID NOT HURT THE DESK CLERK OR GUEST "

" You act like its Ackal or the Sheriffs Dept. fault that these guys robbed the hotel. I don't think that law enforcement put these guys up to robbing this place. You must be one of those people who doesn't know anything when a crime happens in front of you. "

" Seems like Ackal's pink pajamas in jail policy doesn't prevent anybody from doing crime. Another Ackal gimmick fails while real crime continues to get worse by the minute in New Iberia. Most good people have already moved out of town. New Iberia has been quickly sliding down the slippery slope down into getto for decades. "

" Great comment, "fight back people" - I totally agree that the problem isn't that we have people going around robbing, it's that we have people who KNOW the five who robbed the hotel and they aren't turning them in. Until we learn to put all the difference between us behind us and protect and help each other, it's not going to change. We're all in this together, every citizen in this country needs to look out for their neighbor as well , not just themselves. Fight Back !! "

Should start posting billboards in town, IF YOU DO A CRIME IN IBERIA PARISH YOU WILL HANG, people would think twice. You dont see litter in texas because they have 50K fine for litter and signs everywhere to tell you that. We are too nice. "

" That's very scary. I live in Texas and whenever I vist my home town that's where I stay. Hope these criminals are caught. Hoping to visit real soon. It's just sad they have to rob people. "

" 5 of New Iberia's finest criminals at their best. And you people expect what? No one knows anything and when it come to you getting robbed, we want all the help you can get. Learn to help other people and get these ingorant losers off the streets. Because they're to stupid to get jobs, they rob hard working people. "
