Now that his senior year approaches, Fourroux has garnered three varsity letters, led the Cowboys to two Southland Conference titles and two appearances in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division 1-AA) Playoffs, has amassed a 24-10 record at quarterback and has become only the second player in McNeese State history to produce more than 7,000 yards of total offense.
And as his senior year approaches, one thought comes first to Fourroux.

“It seems like yesterday I was out here as a freshman, taking pictures. It may have gone by fast but I had a good time. I have one more season left and I think that we are going to have a good team.”
It’s hard to put a finger on just what Fourroux has meant to the McNeese program, but it doesn’t take long for coaches to laud the Erath native.
“Derrick is everything that we try to recruit,” said MSU co-offensive coordinator Tim Leger. “The guys that come here take to Derrick. They respect him, they like him.
“He’s not a vocal leader at all, he leads by his actions. If there was a poster child of what we want at McNeese, he’d be it.”
Leger said that Fourroux is as professional a player that he has been around and that it’s been a pleasure to coach him and that he will be missed after this season.
Through three years leading the Cowboys, Fourroux has moved to within striking distance of the records of former New Iberia Senior High standout and current Canadian Football League quarterback Kerry Joseph.
Fourroux has completed 412 of 712 passes for 5,749 yards. When you add the 1,374 yards he’s rushed for, it adds up to 7,123 yards of total offense.
Joseph, during his career with McNeese, amassed 9,676 total yards. With another statistical year like 2008, in which Fourroux averaged 241 yards of total offense per game and was 12th in the nation in passing efficiency and 30th in total offense, he’d have the record.
But that’s not the only record that Fourroux is closing in on. He’s also within striking distance of Stephen Starring’s quarterback rushing record of 1,906 yards, entering 2009, Fourroux has 1,376.
True to his nature however, Fourroux probably hasn’t even thought about it, according to Leger.
“He’s never mentioned them and knowing him he probably hasn’t even thought about them,” said Leger.
While not specifically thinking about records, Fourroux knows what setting records at McNeese means after spending the past three years at quarterback.
“It means a lot to me,” he said. “It means that I need to get the job done. I’ve accomplished so much and need to keep going. I was unsure coming here of how my career would turn out. But I did was I was taught to do.”
The former Erath quarterback knows that going to McNeese was the right choice.
“We have two championships and are working on three this year,” said Fourroux. “We’ve been successful the past three years because we worked to get better.”
