DELCAMBRE — All things shrimp will be celebrated in the community of Delcambre this week, and event organizers hope the festivities draw thousands of people.

Delcambre Shrimp Festival Association President Tracy Trim said the annual celebration means a lot to the people of Delcambre.

“It was difficult after Hurricane Rita to pick up all the pieces and get it done,” he said. “But thanks to our volunteers we did. It’s a great thing for our community and it brings in a lot of revenue.”

Trim, 38, who has been involved in the association since he was 16, said the year before Hurricane Rita, the number of festival-goers topped out at around 8,000. He said last year’s festival drew a crowd of more than 5,000, evidence that despite the hardships suffered by people in Delcambre and the surrounding area, they still like to party in honor of the crustacean.

The festival kicks off Wednesday with a family night at the street fair from 6:30 to 10 p.m. and a concert featuring DJ Homer Stelly at 7 p.m.

Thursday night features a fais-do-do beginning at 7 o’clock with music by Cajun Nation. The street fair reopens at 6:30 p.m., all rides for one price of $15.

Trim said Friday and Saturday nights usually draw the biggest crowd and organizers are expecting, with the current economic situation, many people may plan on only coming out for one of those evenings.

The Friday night fais-do-do features musical performances by Mike Dean, Joe Stampley and Jaryd Lane. There is a $5 gate fee for Friday night festivities.

Saturday will be an entire day of fun for attendees, beginning at 7 a.m. when the “all day” fais-do-do kicks off with music by DJ Homer Stelly.

The seventh annual Delcambre Shrimp Festival Poker Run will begin at 8 a.m. and those interested in registering should call Kim or Belinda LeBlanc at 380-3069.

A shrimp cookoff begins at 9 a.m. with judging at 11. Those interested in entering the cookoff should call 685-2944 for more information.

More musical performances featured at the “all-day” fais-do-do will be Kross Fyre, Spit Kup, Jamie Bergeron and Aaron Tippen.

There will be a Fisherman’s Mass at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Shrimp Festival Building that will include the annual “Blessing of the Fleet.”

" I am not sure if there will be a boat parade or not. I do know one thing. New Iberia is very blessed to have one of our young ladies represent this festival. I want to congratulate Lacy Gail Blanchard on her reign as the Delcambre Shrimp Queen. I can remember the day when if you were not from Delcambre or Erath you did not stand a chance to win this pageant. Lacy will represent us well and I wish her the best during her reign. Congratulations Lacy! "
