After almost five years of planning, New Iberia finally has its welcome signs.

“This is something I’ve had on my list for four-and-a-half years,” New Iberia Mayor Curry said. “It’s finally happening.”

There are three signs, all of which were installed Wednesday.

Bobby Calhoun of Signs and Banners, out of Natchitoches, works to set up New Iberia's new 'Queen City' sign on Louisiana 182. Calhoun was working Wednesday with St. Michael's Signs out of New Iberia.

Two are at the entrances to the city at each end of Louisiana 182 and the third is on Center Street.

The signs will be lit at night. There is landscaping, with sprinklers, around them.

Curry said the New Iberia Garden Club will maintain the area around the sign on Louisiana 14 and the Azalea Garden Club and a master gardener will maintain the two on Louisiana 182.

Mayor Pro Tem and arts and cultural committee chairman Fred-die DeCourt said the committee designed the signs.

The process was a long one because they had to be approved by the state Department of Trans-portation and Development, and the committee was asked to redesign them more than once.

“I think they (the signs) are a great asset,” Curry said. “It’s part of our continuing efforts to beautify the city.”

" Why complain? At least something is happening! The Mayor of our city is the best we've EVER seen and you complain because of what's on a few signs? Look at the buildings lining our streets Lewis and the homes on Center St. Why not complain about their condition and the state that they are sitting in? We have brand-new Elementary Schools, a brand-new update on Hopkins St. and Jefferson Island road is finally done, along with the new Overpass on 90 giving a free-flow for less accidents. Complain about things that really matter folks! Stop waisting your time like this! "

The only ones who dont want this forum or the special interest groups and some select politicians who are having their friends write here for they are afraid that their IP Address's are tracked...YES People you can be tracked here "

" It's called Queen City because New Iberia is a progressive town that embraces the homosexual lifestyle. Come and join in our celebration. It's estimated 15 to 20 % of New Iberia is gay or in the closet gay, well above the national average of 5 to 10 %. "

" "New Iberia" lS indeed be on the signs. The words are in WHITE for everyone that's blind. You can't miss it because the WHITE lettering will be against a HUNTER GREEN background. I'm sorry, if you miss it, somethings wrong. New Iberia IS on the front of the sign. "Thank you for visiting The Queen City" is on the back of the sign; visible to motorists traveling out of town. Simple LOGICS...don't just base your comments from the picture above. "Queen City of the Bayou Teche" is just a nickname like "the Big Apple". Do some HISTORY folks! "

" This comment is strictly to inform. First off, for a meeting last year, reps from New Iberia traveled to Natchitoches, where they seen a beautiful example of a gateway monument sign that the City of Natchitoches displays at the entrance of the city. The sign was provided by Signs & Banners, LLC. I'm sorry, if I see you with a shirt on that I like, I'm gonna ask you were you got it. Wherever you bought it from, that's the first place that I'll shop for that very same shirt. This is the same situation. Lets be less sensitive! "

" I saw the new sign at 90 and 14. Not being from around here except for the last couple years I was surprised when I saw it but I thought the opposite of the above posters. I understood it to mean that the people of NI were proud of their city and had nicknamed it the QUEEN CITY. Made me feel proud of the city also. "

" The responses below are generally part of what's wrong with New Iberia. Everyone's complaining from the get-go that the sign doesn't promote the city's name, but as the designer himself points out, it's on the OTHER side. Drive out and take a look. My point...look at the things from a different perspective now and then; you may be amazed to find out there's more to the world than what's important to YOU. "

" Why did the Mayor use a company from Natchitoches, Louisiana to do this job???

They are always saying to shop New Iberia, so why did they not give this government job to a New Iberia advertising company? More government mentality of do as I say, not as I do... "

" Actually, I am THE designer of this sign. Yes, a basic sketch was created by the committee, but it was designed by ME, on behalf of Signs & Banners, LLC.

And to those commenting, the sign DOES have New Iberia on it. Thats the biggest part of the sign. Queen City is mention on the back!!! "

" I also feel like our New Iberia should be someplace on these signs. They are visitng the city of New Iberia, Not the QUEEN CITY! It took almost 5 years to get this done and this was done poorly by leaving out our cities name on these signs. Can't even get a sign right that exposes our great cities name. What a shame! We just can't even come of with something so simple and do the job right. How can we expect anything big to be done properly by this group. "

LOST wrote on Aug 7, 2009 1:54 AM:

" Has the city of New Iberia changed it's official name to Queen City? I don't think so, so why is New Iberia not on these signs?

I think these signs should read "Thanks for visiting New Iberia". I think these signs are going to confuse visitors or travelers unfamilar with the area into thinking this place is called Queen City and they will simply pass us by when looking for New Iberia. Very confusing to those not from around here. "
