AGL should be good neighbor

AGL Resources did not like the presence of a reporter at a meeting this week as it met with state officials to discuss its intention to expand its natural gas storage cavern operations. That’s OK, really, because it was indeed a private meeting.

Businesses have every right to talk to the state or federal lawmakers who represent their interests just as any person can contact their lawmaker and make a case for their interests, but if AGL is to expand its facility at Lake Peigneur, it will need to give residents of the lake more assurance that its operations are safe.

Atlanta-based AGL Resources is in the energy business and, as any company hopes to do, wants to increase its capacity to earn money. Expanding a businesses can be good for the surrounding community as more jobs are created, some temporary during construction, others more permanent as a larger facility is likely to need a larger staff.

The state, too, could gain in the energy revenue it receives from transactions, as well as the income and sales taxes generated.

But there is a responsibility that any company has to, as best they can, be a good neighbor.

Although it is impossible to please everyone, AGL should continue dialogue with residents at Lake Peigneur, letting those folks know what and how they are expanding.

No doubt, the folks who have been monitoring the facility are going to keep up with the company’s permit process.

Sometimes expanding a business is good for the economy, but that should be balanced with the receptiveness of the community it will directly impact.

It should be hoped that both sides try to work with each other to achieve a compromise.

" If AGL is so serious in being a good corporate neighbor, why don't they pay Iberia Parish and the State of Louisiana a surcharge for every cubic foot of natural gas stored in the salt domes.

This money could be used to improve this parish and the State. To recoup the surcharge, AGL can charge the other states, who benefit more from this project, more for the natural gas.

What other state would give AGL, or any other company, a permit to do such a thing in their state? None!!! "

    " To Curious:
First off I am brave enough to put my name behind my opinion.
After the Texaco catastrophe my father supervised the removal
of approximately 6,000 pilings, now AGL wants to scatter these wells
throughout the lake. We were promised from Equitable storage only 2.
When AGL was asked how many, the answer: “many more”, other statements
were “up to 20”. My children water sport frequently in the lake and need no
help from AGL in building a Slalom course! . As I stated earlier this lake has a lot of recreation/tourism value! "

    " To Mr. Derise...

I've been following this story and I've yet to hear anything specifice from those opposed to the expansion. I think that is why you are accused of having a NIMBY attitude. Can you back up what you say with any examples? Like what makes you think all is not "good"? What has made you believe they put their "greed" before public safety? "

" I think AGL is a good corporate neighbor. The folks on Lake Peigneur won't allow expansion because of the NIMBY attitude. No amount of dialogue will achieve a compromise here. I do live on Lake Peigneur, so it matters to me about safety issues. However, some people don't even live on the lake and writes all the negitive. I welcome the expansion project and hope the court system will allow it.

    That's my opinion. "

" In AGL's corporate opinion, they are "good neighbors"...,
if you are willing to listen to their corporate spin produced
by hired public relation consultants who are trained to study
the people and convince them that all is "good". I am sick and tired of
other people telling us what should and should not happen in our back yards.
It is not a case of NIMBY, it is a case of corporate greed and get out of our
way you pesky lake residents. This lake has a lot of potential, don't blow it !
