Olivier places in seven events at state

Ross Olivier of New Iberia competed in his final Louisiana Long Course Championship state swim meet earlier this month, placing in the top five in six events and qualifying for sectionals in four of those, with his times in two other events potentially qualifying for sectional.

Olivier finished with 92 points at the meet, placing second in the 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter backstroke. He also was third in the 200-meter backstroke, fourth in the 100-meter freestyle, fifth in the 100-meter butterfly and was on Riverside Swim Team’s third-place 400-meter freestyle relay squad.

The meet was held July 9-12 at the LSU Natatorium in Baton Rouge.

In the 50-meter freestyle, Olivier finished second in 24.82 seconds. Philip Gallego of Franco’s Athletic Club of Mandeville placed first in 24.63. Sectional qualifying time was 25.79 seconds.

Olivier finished second in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.41, behind Brock Davis of Crawfish Aquatics in Baton Rouge (59.82 seconds). Sectional time was 1:05.29.

Olivier was third in the 200 backstroke in 2:16.06, with the qualifying time for sections at 2:37.39. Davis finished first in 2:09.39, provisionally qualifying for junior nationals, and Brian Carr of Crescent City Swim Club also provisionally qualified for juniors in 2:09.53.

In the 100-meter freestyle, Olivier was fourth in a sectionals-qualifying time of 54.72 seconds. Christian Riess of Nu Wave swimming of New Orleans was first in a provisional juniors time of 52.92. Carr was second (53.85) and Davis third (53.93).

Olivier placed fifth in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.35. Riess was first (57.54), Andrew Miller of the City of Lafayette (COLA) swim team was second (58.86), Spencer May of Crawfish Aquatics was third (59.02) and Olivier’s Riverside Swim teammate Joe Chance was fourth (1:00.65). Sectional time was 1:01.89.

Olivier finished seventh in the 200 individual medley in 2:17.75. David Rayner of Crawfish Aquatics was first in 2:08.20, with Riess second in 2:09.75. Juniors qualifying time was 2:11.39. Also beating the sectionals qualifying mark of 2:22.39 were Davis (2:13.81), Colin Babcock of Blast Swim Team (2:15.21), Chance (2:17.58) and Miller (2:17.72).

Olivier finished ninth in the 200 freestyle in 2:04.69. Sectional qualifying time was 2:02.89. Davis finished first (2:00.47), Carr second (2:01.16), Rayner third (2:01.66), Austin Butler of Crawfish Aquatics fourth (2:01.74), Ada Pennington of the Hurricane Swim Club of Slidell fifth (2:02.05), Riess sixth (2:02.32), Chance seventh (2:02.56) and May eighth (2:04.43).

Riverside Swim Team finished third in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:45.46. Lee Sammons, Andrew Borel and Chance swam the other three legs with Olivier. Crawfish Aquatics finished first (3:39.95) and Franco’s Fins was second (3:44.12).

Riverside finished eighth in the 400 medley relay in 4:15.31, with Olivier swimming a leg along with Silas DeJean, Chance and Borel. Crawfish Aquatics was first (4:02.80), City of Shreveport Swim Team was second (4:04.83), Tiger Aquatics of Baton Rouge third (4:09.72), the Canes fourth (4:11.48), Nu Wave fifth (4:12.45), Crawfish “B” sixth (4:13.17) and Crescent City seventh (4:14.11).
